WNMA: We Need More Acronyms (not!)
I just added some new acronyms to my Digital Marketing Glossary. Because we certainly need more acronyms in digital marketing!
SCaaS = Software Components as a Service. This is not a new concept, just a new acronym. In regards to web development or web applications the idea is to take a modular approach to website construction and that only part of the total experience would be provided by each external part of the application. The most recent articles I have read refer to SCaaS whenever they are discussing components parts of a website such as the front-end interfaces or components of the back-end but this could refer to plug-ins or modules that provide a single service such as credit card processing.
FEaaS = Front End as a Service. Emerging front-end only web applications are now offered that allow marketing departments to develop web pages and applications without the need for developers on the front-end. A great example of FEaaS is provided by Mason at TryMason.com.
What's particularly attractive about this approach to building a website or a web application is that each of the connected components can be assembled in a custom fashion so that you don't waste time maintaining components you don't need. The front-end is a completely drag and drop design and you can easily connect your design to 3rd party API's for data, e-commerce, or adding complex widgets to your site that other companies maintain.
If you built a web site like this well then you could assemble a very complex web application without writing any code at all.
HCMS = Headless content management system. An FEaaS would actually pair-up nicely in a headless CMS. A headless CMS allows you to create content that can be syndicated to more than one website at a time. For instance, a news company who maintains many websites could create their stories with images and other content within a headless content management system. That content could then be syndicated to other web sites running FEaaS with a unique look and feel. Even though the content is the same on the assorted websites where it is syndicated, the look and feel will automatically match the target website to make the content feel relevant there.
We need more digital marketing acronyms! (not!).
