Wm. White's Standard Station
In spite of it normally being slow the day before Thanksgiving, I was in a near-constant state of motion from the time I arrived at office, and much of it had to do with gathering and distributing information to respective parties on my recent sales. I also had an appointment with a woman to notarize a document, along with handing over a proceeds check and closing statement to the seller of a recent closing.
One of my friends was in need of a helping hand in getting an exceptionally heavy door carried out of his house and loaded into the bed of a truck, just so he could get it delivered to a workshop for much-needed repairs. I was once again reminded how much heavier those old doors can be in comparison to what we'd find in Menards. Well, it stands to reason because back then, they used real wood instead of compressed and glued sawdust covered with plastic.
I had to make a flying trip over to Clear Lake which wasn't the best of ideas because the traffic going to and from was downright terrible, but I did manage to stop and get a good photo of the soon-to-be frozen lake. That heavy traffic was likely due to all these companies and shops, closing their doors and Noon, which was around the time I headed over.
Another little 'job' I had to do, was to go over a property an out-of-town client of mine owns, just to get a better look at something that's gonna need some attention in the very near future, and since that property is close to East Park, I was in near shock when seeing at least a half dozen deer in its back yard, that were wandering around as if they owned the place. My gosh! Those vile creatures are not only exponentially multiplying, they're getting all the bolder with their growing numbers. Truth be told, they looked like the mangiest of creatures.
While visiting with my dear friend this morning, I made sure to mention that she'd likely be impressed with tonight's photo which after a little research on my part, I'd discovered that it was William White's Standard Station which at the time, was located at 1204 N. Federal, that now happens to be the vacant lot directly north of Domino's Pizza. Yes, I do remember there being a filling station on that corner, and if my memory serves me, the guy that owns it, had every intention of building new, but from what I heard, he was having all the many issues with contractors and our city, so he basically dropped his planned build-out and purchased the building they're now in, from Joe Paulsen who owns Kleen Sweep Construction. Without a doubt, that guy had to've spent hundreds of thousands of dollars to get that building looking the way it does now. I hope someday to have the opportunity to visit with the owner of Domino's Pizza, just so I can get some clarification on what really went wrong with his plans to build on that lot across the street. I'm sure some of you old 'north-enders' will possibly recognize the two men in tonight's photo, because I don't have a clue.
While reading our MLS's monthly newsletter, I discovered the part-owner of Hildebrand Real Estate is retiring at the end of next month. I didn't have many dealing over the years with Pam Hildebrand, and those few times we worked together, she seemed fine. From what I read, Tim Latham, who's the other part-owner, will move up to being the managing broker for that company, so yet another baton gets passed along. I wish Pam well in her retirement.
Since another holiday is near, I was having thoughts about past family get togethers, and after having to endure multiple years of being wrongfully abused by a number of 'kin', I couldn't help wondering if but one of them is now feeling any sort of compunction over what they purposely did to me. Truthfully, I have my doubts about there being even one, and only because by now, they've re-written those segments of their past. I did mention to someone today, that about all I'm now doing, is quietly waiting for karma to settle a number of scores. But, sometimes it can take a generation or two before it finally hits because I've actually seen where the sins of the mothers and fathers, are passed down to the sons and daughters. Pretty scary, but true.
I learned a new word today which is 'agitprop' which according to our online dictionary, is political (originally Communist) propaganda in art or literature. I think the 'agit' is likely a shortened 'agitate', and 'prop', short for 'propaganda'. The word was used in an article I was ready about how those die-hards in MAGA, managed to poison the many weak minds.
Another article I found thought-provoking, was about the actress Sharon Stone's remarks regarding the outcome of our recent elections, and one of her statements definitely hit home with me which went, “Adolescence is very arrogant, adolescence thinks it knows everything, adolescence is naive and ignorant and arrogant, and we Americans are in our ignorant, arrogant adolescence. We have not seen this before in our country.” Her words rang as clear as a bell when reading where Tommy Tuberville, who's the Senator from Alabama, coming out and saying our country spent hundreds of billions of dollars on Ukraine's war with Russia, when in fact, he'd purposely confused Russia's war expenditures with our country's. Perhaps he's now learning how to agitprop.
Tonight's One-liner is: No duty is more urgent, than that of returning thanks.
