WLAN Client Roaming is Complex

Clients use many different metrics in the roaming process. Common metrics include:

  • SNR (signal-to-noise ratio)
  • Signal strength
  • Missed beacons
  • Retries
  • CRC errors
  • Hysteresis
  • Sadly: lost connection

Getting in front of client selection is key if the device is truly mobile and not simply nomadic AND if it is Corp owned asset. So many "it depends" qualifiers in wireless design!

Unfortunately there is no consistency of application of these metrics across manufacturers. Each vendor decides which metrics to use and how to prioritize. In the same network we may see 'sticky' client devices hold onto APs longer than they should and other client devices that roam constantly , even while stationary. All part of the fun of WLAN design, I suppose...
