WKRP in Cincinnati (2020 TV movie)

WKRP in Cincinnati (2020 TV movie) - NOT a reboot! A made for TV movie, using the format, characters and plot of the ABC TV series...

Set in the year 2020 - This is my proposal for a new episode of the 1978–1983 & 1991–1993 TV show

Place: [For my story] 50,000 Watt, clear channel, independent, AM radio station, WKRP in Cincinnati

Time: Saturday, October 24, 2020 – 10 days before Election Day

Reporter Les Nessman: “With ten days to go until the elections, the eyes of the Nation are, once again, on the Buckeye State. The ‘Heart of It All’ voters will decide who will be President of our great Republic… Our so-called ‘swing’ State HAS been the ‘decider’ in numerous campaigns over the years – even more so in 2020…

Stay tuned for up to the minute headlines, as the campaign, already red hot, is getting even tighter...

For those of you who are new to WKRP; welcome!?

Our signal was greatly improved over the summer. We’re now one of only about a dozen so-called ‘clear channel’ 50,000 Watt AM radio transmitters in America…

This means that listeners - as far North as Detroit & Chicago, past Nashville to the South, as far East as Pittsburgh, and as far West as St. Louis – can hear our reports – especially at night…

?You see, radio waves “bounce” off the Earth’s ionosphere much better after dark…

We, here at WKRP, understand that a free and open press is bedrock of an informed Democracy.

We always strive for fair, complete and uncensored news…

I promise that all of us journalists will not let our personal ‘agenda’s’ bias our reporting…

Except, of course, for my daily ‘Letter to the Editor’ – heard each weeknight after the 6 PM headlines…

Speaking making our discourse even more diverse…

We are expanding our coverage; each night next week we will have our own staff - people who work here - provide their?own opinions…

You may – or may not – like their viewpoints, BUT that IS my point here: we must hear from ALL ‘sides’ - NOT just the Big Two ’Major’ political parties.

On Monday we will hear from WKRP Station Manager: Ms. Jennifer Marlowe… Trust me; you WILL want to tune in to hear her ‘take’ on democracy in America…”

WKRP in Cincinnati?is an American?sitcom?that featured the misadventures of the staff of a struggling fictional?radio station?in?Cincinnati,?Ohio. The show was created by?Hugh Wilson?and was based upon his experiences working in advertising sales at?Top 40radio station?WQXI?in Atlanta. Many of the characters and even some of the stories (including season 1 episode 7, "Turkeys Away" *) are based on people and events at WQXI.[1]

The?ensemble cast?consists of?Gary Sandy?(as Andy Travis),?Howard Hesseman?(Johnny Fever),?Gordon Jump?(Arthur Carlson),?Loni Anderson?(Jennifer Marlowe),?Tim Reid?(Venus Flytrap),?Jan Smithers?(Bailey Quarters),?Richard Sanders?(Les Nessman) and?Frank Bonner?(Herb Tarlek).[2]

Like many other?MTM?productions, the humor came more from?running gags?based on the known predilections and quirks of each character, rather than from outlandish plots (*) or racy situations,[citation needed]?since the show has a realistic setting. The characters also developed somewhat over the course of the series.

The series won a?Humanitas Prize?and received 10?Emmy Award?nominations, including three for Outstanding Comedy Series.?Andy Ackerman?won an Emmy Award for Videotape Editing in season 3.

WKRP?premiered September 18, 1978, on the?CBS?television network, and aired for four seasons and 90 episodes through April 21, 1982. Starting in the middle of the second season, CBS repeatedly moved the show around its schedule, contributing to lower ratings and its eventual cancellation.

When?WKRP?went into?syndication, it became an unexpected success.[3]?For the next decade, it was one of the most popular sitcoms in syndication, outperforming many programs which had been more successful in?prime time, including all the other?Enterprises sitcoms.

Jump, Sanders, and Bonner reprised their roles, appearing as regular characters in a spin-off/sequel series,?The New WKRP in Cincinnati, which ran from 1991 to 1993 in syndication. Hesseman, Reid and Anderson also reprised their roles on this show as guest stars.

In my story, the GOP keeps trying to shut WKRP down - since they refuse to air propaganda for the Republicans.

This sabotage is repeadtly thwarted by a "guardian angel".

Example: when the Radio Station is to be attacked by the Ohio State National Guard - sent in by Ohio's Governor, the mystery good guy tells the station to - until the troops leave the station - operate from remotely - from the physical transmitter site - which happens to be in the hills across the Ohio river = in Kentucky - so it is outside of the jurisdiction of Ohio authorities.

Reporter Less Nessman knows who this guy is - but his identity is not revealed until the end of my movie.

*spoiler alert*

The "guardian angel" is the mayor of Cincinnati. I want the character to be played, if possible, by the real mayor of Cincinnati in 1978 - when the TV show originally aired.

Jerry Springer says he 'ruined culture' with his drama-filled daytime talk show: 'I just hope hell isn’t that hot’ (11.12.2022)

"There was never a thought in my mind, growing up, that I’d be in show business. I started out being a lawyer, and working for [the election team of US Senator] Bobby Kennedy [when he ran for President in 1968]. My background is political and legal."

Springer would go on to serve as the Mayor of Cincinnati from 1977 to 1978, after which he was offered a job for the NBC affiliate in his city...
