The Wizard Behind the Curtain

“Knowing yourself is the beginning of wisdom.” ~Aristotle

The human brain is an amazing organ, whose function is to make associations, recognize patterns, project how to avoid painful patterns from the past, recall memories, keep all systems of the body in working order, and create ongoing perceptions of the world around us. While it is a useful servant for maneuvering this life, it is a terrible master. The brain seeks to be busy constantly, which creates distance from the feeling aspect of our nature.

Although every living thing has a brain, the Mind (or as I call it, the Wizard Behind the Curtain), is who we really are, at our very core. We are far more than the functions of our brain. By allowing the Wizard to run the show from behind the curtain, we can maintain constant access to the innate wisdom that every living thing possesses, that is far greater than our personal intellect alone. As the brain is busy creating our personal reality and focusing on thoughts about past wounds or future possibilities, this constant activity can distract us from recognizing the inherent power within the present moment. The present is not only the place, where we can find insight to guide us in the moment. The present moment is all that we ever really have.

The past is gone, the future uncertain,
while the present is where life unfolds.

Feelings are a great barometer of current thought only and may not have anything at all to do with external circumstances. Feelings represent the thoughts and perceptions that you have about events and are not coming directly from the events themselves. In other words, nothing has the power to make you feel a certain way. Your feelings are always coming from your thoughts about any given situation, in that moment.

See your thoughts for what they are; servants for use when needed, NOT the masters of your destiny. You are far more than any random thought that your brain can generate!

You are the Great Wizard
Behind the Curtain!

~Excerpt from Reflections on Transcendence by Elizabeth M. Lykins

Perhaps the most important lesson to learn about life is this one: You are not your mind, although you have a mind, just as you are not your hand, although you have a hand. You are a formless, spiritual essence (not in a Biblical sense) that is universally connected to all other beings. Once you grasp this, everything else about life will begin to make sense to you.

You are a visitor to this mortal world and the body you inhabit. There is nothing more important to know than that.
