Witnessing the Programming of Your Mind
It is 6am, and I am flying out of West Palm Beach after an incredible 2-day business conference. I spent these few days networking and learning with other like-minded entrepreneurs, each of us building 7 and 8 figure businesses.
The mindset of these people were of the highest caliber.
Yet, as I take off to meet my connecting flight in Atlanta, I am horrified by the habits of those around me here in First Class.
I am currently looking at 4 video monitors, streaming 4 different network news channels. The headlines are as follows:
· Apartment fire in the Bronx
· Failing Our Children
· Political party is purging the truth
· Police officer shot
· Man convicted after hammer attack
· Probe into deadly subway collapse
· Public schools replace Columbus Day
I could go on, but you get the idea.
Now, this isn’t a tirade on the news or the media. This isn’t political, so don’t take it that way.
These people around me are literally choosing to program their minds with negativity, constant fear and worry. And they don’t even know they are doing it because they do not understand how the subconscious mind works.
We literally call TV and Radio news “programs”. Not only are we tuning in and choosing what to fill our minds with, but what most horrified me was how they were doing it.
During the early morning hours, out subconscious mind is more open to suggestion that at other times. As I said is now 6:25 am.
However, one gentleman was also choosing to read a magazine article that also had some negative headlines. While his mind is focused on reading the magazine, all the words, ideas and energy of negativity from the news was freely flowing into his subconscious mind.
Another gentlemen next to me closed his eyes and started to drift asleep as he was being told the stock market was dropping and was told about the countless tragedies making headlines. As you drift to sleep, your subconscious mind continues to work on the the thoughts and ideas you enter the sleep state with. It is prime for being programmed.
How our mind works is really simple.
First it is the repetition of words and ideas the subconscious builds its programming around. If these individuals have the habit of watching the news on the plane, it is fair to say they have the habit of watching the news first thing in the morning at home.
This means every day there is a repetition of negative ideas entering their mind continually as the subconscious is open for programming. It is even worse for the gentleman falling asleep on the plane and entering an alpha or theta wave state, which is really the language of the subconscious mind.
Any idea that enters the mind through repetition becomes part of the operating system and software that runs your life. People wonder why they may be worried, negative, critical or anxious. It is because the nonstop flow of information into the mind is worry, negative, critical and anxiety provoking.
Behaviorist all agree, when raising children it is best to have a very high ratio of positive to negative interactions for children to have a positive self esteem and good relationship with their parents and family. The famed marriage researcher, John Gottman says marriages can often be in danger when the positive to negative ratio drops below 4:1.
We all know that the positive to negative ration of news stories is the opposite, and likely even worse than 1:4.
But lets compare that with my morning routine.
When I awoke early, I began listening to a recorded mindset lesson. It was my 10th morning in a row of listening to this message, specifically related to building my business’s service and wealth. In fact, I arrived early at the airport before the check-in counter was open. While others who arrived after me complained about the lack of communication and service, I popped in my AirPod Pros, and turned on the noise cancelling to drown them out and finished my morning lesson.
While the video screens were going on around me, I had my iPad out and was writing my affirmations. Keep in mind, it is the repetition of ideas and words that builds our subconscious operating system. In fact, handing writing builds and strengthens up to 10,000 neural pathways compared with 600 if you were to be typing.
So what was I writing?
I was writing down my goal affirmation, 3 times in a row. On my connecting flight back to Salt Lake City, I’ll write that goal out another 6 times. Sometime tonight (before I collapse after my sons’ 7:30pm little league game), I will write that goal another 9 times.
I also take time every morning to write out a script of my self-image, or the person I want to be or need to become to achieve my goals. My self image script includes ideas about how I show up at home. My physical health. My spirituality, business and even a summary of the vision I have for my life.
Why do I do this?
Because we become what we think about. Not only does our brain biologically and neurochemically hardwire thinking patters into neural pathways through repetition—but our mind continually executes on the ideas buried in our subconscious mental programming.
This is why no matter how hard you try you grow up to be negative like your father, or worried about money like your mother. You can’t help but adopt the programming of your environment, unless you learn how to think and reprogram your mind.
I am very careful about what I put into my mind. This is how I turned my previous annual income into a monthly income. In fact, I earned double my annual income a month ago. This is how I came off anxiety and depression medication. This is how I improved my relationship with my wife. This is how I released a ton of weight (not withstanding the COVID 19lbs some of put back on).
Contrast that to people who are negative, upset, worried and fearful who then watch the news nonstop and believe the world is falling to pieces.
We become what we think about all day long.
What do you think about all day long? What ideas and words are you choosing to put into your mind on a daily basis?
My plea to you is to become aware of what you are thinking and choosing to populate your mind with, because you are being programmed by it, whether you like it or not.

3 年Very timely! I admit I often find myself caught off guard by other people’s outlooks when they’re fearful, anxious, etc. I make a conscious effort to ALLOW different, more constructive influences in my life. We all have control over what we allow! This has direct benefits to myself in terms of my physical, spiritual, emotional, and mental health. It also benefits people around me b/c I’m not adding to the negative influences around them and can even counteract some of those influences! ????
