Without Securing AI, there is no Trustworthy AI

??If we want to succeed in getting intended outcomes with AI, we require a more intentional path. I started 5 years ago trying to find a systemic solution to secure AI so we don’t repeat our #cybersecurity mistakes from the past. If we take a reactive approach to a ? impact technology such as #ai we run into risks of 1. incurring high cost and 2. Even worse, be unsuccessful in securing AI systems. And that is a critical problem. Securing AI is crucial to protect privacy, ensure the integrity and reliability of AI systems, comply with legal standards, prevent misuse, and mitigate potential negative impacts on the economy and society.

Securing AI systems is critically important for several reasons:

Vulnerabilities in AI systems that can be exploited to compromise organizations. These vulnerabilities include the risk of influencing AI learning through data poisoning or altering models to serve malicious purposes. Beyond data-related vulnerabilities, AI systems may also suffer from traditional run-time software errors, which could allow attackers to hijack local computers and infiltrate broader business networks. The potential damage from such AI system breaches is vast, affecting everything from critical infrastructure to human life, and could influence human decision-making and democratic processes, as well as sector and business governance.

Privacy Protection: AI systems often process vast amounts of personal and sensitive data. Ensuring the security of these systems is paramount to protect this data from unauthorized access and breaches, which could lead to identity theft, financial fraud, and other privacy invasions.

Integrity of Decision-making: AI systems are increasingly used in decision-making processes in various sectors like healthcare, finance, and law enforcement. The integrity of these decisions is crucial as they can significantly impact people's lives. Securing AI systems ensures that the decisions are accurate, reliable, and free from tampering or biases introduced by malicious actors.

Prevention of Malicious Use: AI technologies can be weaponized or used in malicious ways, such as creating deepfakes, automating cyber attacks, or developing autonomous weapons. Securing AI systems helps prevent such misuse and ensures that AI technologies are used responsibly and ethically.

Economic Impact: Cyberattacks on AI systems can have severe economic consequences, including loss of business, regulatory fines, and damage to brand reputation. Security measures are essential to safeguard businesses and the economy from these potential losses.

Trust and Adoption: For AI to be widely adopted and trusted, users must feel confident that AI systems are secure and that their data and interactions are protected. Trust is a fundamental component in the relationship between technology and its users, and security is a key factor in building and maintaining this trust.

Given these factors, the criticality of securing AI systems cannot be overstated. It involves a range of practices, from ensuring data protection and privacy to developing secure AI algorithms and safeguarding against potential threats and vulnerabilities.

In my sessions last few weeks on security I have discussed about some of the security incidents already playing out

??Did you know AI as-a-service providers such as Hugging Face are susceptible to two critical risks that could allow threat actors to escalate privileges, and perform cross tenant attacks on models?

We want Trustworthy AI, ensure AI systems we a rebuilding and deploying have trustworthy characteristics (I had defined 8 pillars of Trustworthy AI, Security being the first one 5 years ago, see https://lnkd.in/eHbjnSrH ) How are going to get there? Can we get there on the current trajectory?

??"When we move fast, we break things. In recent months, Wiz Research partnered with AI-as-a-Service companies to uncover common security risks that may impact the industry and subsequently put users’ data and models at risk. In our?State of AI in the Cloud report, we show that AI services are already present in more than 70% of cloud environments, showcasing how critical the impact of those findings are.?"
