Without Reading, Increase your Reading Speed

We all should be grateful for living in an age where information is available in the form of audio, video and print. Whenever we want information, we have the freedom to choose from watching videos/listening to audio clips/ Reading.

As the title suggest “Increase your reading speed without reading” focus is on watching the videos and audios in a way that indirectly increases your reading speed.

Start watching/listening at 1.25 times the play speed of media (video/audio) file.

All the media players have the option of play-speed. Select the 1.25 times speed of it. I am not going into the details of which software gives you this option and how to do it. That will make this article very long, just check your present software there is very high chance of having that option or google about it. (I use VLC media player).

Many people listen to audio books at 2 times normal play speed. So listening at 1.25 times is not challenging. Unless you are watching/listening for entertainment, or with the purpose of learning a new language, or for improving your public speaking skills.

This is how it improves your reading speed – it increases your sub-vocalization speed. To define it in a simple way – sub-vocalization is saying in our mind what we read. Your reading speed is dependent on it whether you are aware or not. When you start listening at a higher speed, our sub-vocalization speed increases and hence reading speed increases. This advice is for beginners trying to improve their reading speed and not for people who already read at high speeds. Because there is a limit to which you increase the play speed.

Majority of times, the speed above 1.5 times brings down the quality of audio. If the speaker has a habit of speaking fast - you tend to face challenge while hearing those words.

This also saves time - 15 minute media file can be finished in 12 minutes; 3 minutes are saved for every 15 minutes watched. If you listen for an hour daily then 12 minutes are saved every day, in a month you will have 6 EXTRA HOURS!!!

In the comment section, let me know your experience while listening to audio clips at faster speeds.

Sub vocalization is a waste of time. Leaving it out saves a lot of time. Auditory people face challenges in doing this. Visual people adapt much faster
