Wishing you all the best of the season and into the new year!
As 2022 draws to a close and as we reconnect with the people and places we love the most, it is a good time to reflect on the extraordinary year we’ve had at United.
The year began with resounding change – announcements that confirmed our tangible diversity, equity and inclusion efforts like the opening of Aviate Academy, investments that are helping to advance our sustainability commitments like those in our United Airlines Ventures program, route announcements that will connect travelers to more of the world – and a brand campaign that gives life to the good we’re doing. And, that trend continued with announcement after announcement throughout the year – designed to serve all our travelers.
With borders reopening, I traveled to many additional destinations this year, meeting with many of you around the world; for me, it's the most effective way to authentically understand market dynamics. Every interaction was meaningful to me and a display of the industry’s continued resilience and optimism. A few highlights:
·??????Long-anticipated trips to Rio de Janeiro, S?o Paulo, and Buenos Aires to celebrate 30 years of service to those destinations. It was heartwarming to connect with the communities and people we’ve been committed to for so long; many telling me that United’s continued service to South America throughout the pandemic was a lifeline for families and businesses alike.
·??????One of many trips across the Atlantic was to Tel Aviv to meet with local officials and media to promote tourism to the city. Israel’s history and culture is incredibly rich, and my short visit to Jerusalem left me longing to return and share the city with my family.
·??????My visit to Tokyo just prior to the easing of Visa entry restrictions was an insightful trip highlighting a pent-up demand for travel. I’m proud of our team's thoughtful approach to generating momentum for our Asia/Pacific route network. The return of travel in these markets is cautious, but steady – an example of a strong connection across the Pacific.

·??????There were countless conferences and conventions, events and engagements, anniversaries, and inaugurals – domestic and international – where we connected, celebrated, laughed and shared. These in-person connections simply irreplaceable.
As we look to the year ahead, our preparation for 2023 is supported by the travel trends we’re seeing: continued steady leisure travel, returning business travel and everything in between (hello, bleisure!). You can count on us to continue our transatlantic route leadership with our summer schedule that adds several destinations and frequencies to our network. And more – you’ll experience flying on newer, more comfortable planes as we begin taking possession of 700 new aircraft, including at least 100 Boeing 787 Dreamliners! As you would expect, you’ll see continued tangible action on both our DEI and sustainability commitments, with a focus on doing good in the communities we serve.
No one can predict what’s in store for the new year, but our airline remains committed to flexibility, adaptability and a hospitality-focused experience. Whatever 2023 may bring, we will respond with resilience, humility and good nature. We will be a force for good.?
To our customers, partners and industry colleagues: thank you. This year is for you and made possible by you. Your partnership, feedback and business, critical to our mutual success.
I hope your year-end is all you hope for and that you’re able to spend time with those you love. Happy holidays and Happy New Year!
Hospitality always
