? I Recently Savoured

1 - Think Like a Freak: The Authors of Freakonomics Offer to Retrain Your Brain by Steven D. Levitt, Stephen J. Dubner

Apply economic theories creatively for unconventional problem-solving.

  1. Challenges conventional thinking and encourages a new approach to problem-solving that’s clear, pragmatic, and unconventional.

  3. Emphasises the importance of knowing what to measure and how to measure it effectively.
  4. Advocates for the benefits of admitting ignorance as a starting point for discovery.
  5. Provides examples of how redefining problems can lead to extraordinary insights.
  6. The only way to facilitate change is by thinking like a Freak
  7. Quitting is a cornerstone of thinking like a Freak. You can rephrase it as “letting go.” After all, it would be best if you gave up some old habits, limitations, and conventional ways of contemplating an issue.
  8. People who disregard unrealistic goals tend to be healthier physically and mentally.
  9. Those who lie will react to incentives differently, so you must know which tools to have in such cases, just like Van Halen used.

?? Cherished Revisits

1 - TED Talks by Chris Anderson

Guidance on delivering powerful speeches, drawing from the wealth of TED.

  1. I first read this in 2017. I reread it to help remind me of some tips for the TEDx I was preparing for.
  2. Chris Anderson distils the essence of great public speaking into actionable advice for delivering powerful presentations.
  3. Emphasises the importance of starting with a strong, relatable story to connect with the audience.
  4. Advocates for the necessity of a throughline, a connecting theme that ties the entire talk together.
  5. Details how mastering the art of delivering your talk without notes can create a more authentic and engaging experience. Having just done a TEDx talk myself with no props like notes and slides does make it more engaging.
  6. Offers practical tips on handling nerves and includes exercises to enhance voice control and body language.

2 - “Conversation Starters That Will Get You (and Others) Talking” by Diane Weston.

I’m re-engaging with the ‘revised’ edition to explore the depths of dialogue.

What’s taking me so long? The OCD in me is attempting to identify all the revisions ??

  1. it’s a re-read, and its still good
  2. I find you can open the book and pull out multiple great questions.
  3. I’m a fan of Jeffersonian dinners, and this book gives me some questions I look forward to using
  4. So what changed? well, the first copy I was given was a Beta and had some small errors in it. The latest copy I read was the real book published on Amazon

4 - "Super-Communicators" by Charles Duhigg

How to craft compelling messages that captivate and influence audiences.

?? Try This

1 - From "Think Like a Freak" by Steven D. Levitt, Stephen J. Dubner:

Experiment with Problem-Solving: Today, try to solve a problem by redefining it. Instead of following conventional solutions, break the problem into smaller, more manageable parts and approach it from a different angle. Note the new solutions that emerge.

2 - From "The Future We Choose" by Christiana Figueres, Tom Rivett-Carnac:

Eco-Friendly Choices: Choose one action today that reduces your carbon footprint. This could be something as simple as refusing a plastic bag, riding a bike instead of driving, or having a meat-free day. Reflect on how this choice helps the environment and makes you feel more connected to a global effort.

3 - From "TED Talks" by Chris Anderson

Craft Your Own TED Talk: Choose a topic you're passionate about and develop a short, persuasive talk around it. Focus on the structure suggested in the book—start with a compelling hook, support your points with evidence and stories, and conclude with a strong call to action. Practice this talk in front of a mirror, record yourself, or share it with friends or colleagues to refine your public speaking skills and message delivery. This exercise will help you enhance your ability to communicate ideas clearly and effectively, a key takeaway from the book.
