China's Policy Measures Fuel Industrial Metals Recovery

China's recent policy measures, spearheaded by the People's Bank of China (PBOC), represent one of the most comprehensive support packages in recent history, aimed at revitalising both the property sector and the stock market. By cutting the 7-day reverse repo rate by 20 basis points to 1.5% and implementing a 50-basis point reduction in reserve requirement ratios, the PBOC is effectively injecting significant liquidity into the economy. These countercyclical measures, along with targeted support for the property sector—including lower mortgage rates and revised downpayment ratios—are designed to ease financial burdens on households and stimulate consumption. Notably, the establishment of a swap facility to enhance liquidity for equity purchases signals an effort to bolster investor confidence in the stock market.

The ripple effects of these measures are already evident in the industrial metals market. As China, the world's second-largest economy and a leading consumer of commodities, rolls out this policy framework, industrial metals have seen a notable uptick in demand. While these initiatives alone may not resolve the ongoing housing crisis, they could catalyse increased infrastructure spending, thereby providing a significant boost to the metals sector. Should these policies be complemented by fiscal stimulus, the potential for a sustained recovery in industrial metals appears promising, suggesting a more optimistic outlook for the coming months.
