Wisdom Across Generations

Wisdom Across Generations

My dear subscribers and friends,

Do you know how inspiration can hit you out of nowhere? With Thanksgiving dinner just around the corner and the holidays bringing everyone together, I’ve been thinking about my own journey, and the one of many leaders in my network, those ups and downs we all go through. As we gather around the table with family, especially the older folks, it’s the perfect time to soak in their wisdom. It’s wild how often we overlook the lessons from those who’ve really lived. We get so caught up in chasing after fancy titles or the latest trends that we forget about the real-life lessons from people who have experienced it all. An old Arab saying popped into my head, reminding me that the real gems are often buried in the stories of those who came before us.

Remember a networking event, conference, or even just hanging out where someone flaunts their new job title or promotion? It’s impressive at first, right? But honestly, what’s underneath that shiny surface? It’s usually the people in the room with years of experience who have the stories and insights we need. They’ve weathered the storms, and their wisdom is invaluable. So, while it’s easy to get distracted by the glitz, let’s not forget to seek out those who’ve genuinely been through it all. Their advice can help us navigate our own paths.

This isn't just about work; it applies to personal life, too. This week, many of us will be sitting around a table with family and friends. People will share stories and advice and might touch on some sensitive topics that can feel a bit uncomfortable. But instead of brushing those comments aside, take a moment to really listen. Not everything will be sunshine and rainbows, but even the tough stuff has something to teach us. Soak it all in, be grateful, and make the most of it.

Look at the people around you and think about their character for a second. “Don’t underestimate someone with clean honor, a good reputation, or clean hands.” This isn’t just about being a decent human; it’s about realizing that a solid reputation means a lot in a world full of rumors. Surrounding yourself with honest people builds a network of trust that can help you during tough times.

Then there are those powerhouse individuals—the ones with “strong faith, strong muscles, and strong memory.” They inspire us to push our limits, reminding us that strength can show up in many ways, whether bouncing back from a setback or lifting our spirits when we’re down. Keep those folks close; their energy is contagious, and they can motivate you to aim higher.

But let’s be real; we all know those narrow-minded folks who can drain the life out of a conversation. Engaging with them can feel pointless. Instead of wasting your energy, focus on connecting with those who see the bigger picture. Creativity thrives when we’re around different viewpoints, not stuck in the same old mindset.

And a quick note about the younger generation there’s a saying I grew up with: “Don’t argue with the small-minded, the young in age, or the inexperienced.” Youngsters bring fresh ideas and energy, which is incredible. However, when it comes to deeper conversations, not everyone has the wisdom that comes from life experience. It’s about finding that balance, learning from each other and growing together.

As I think this over, it’s clear that it’s not just about who we know; it’s about who we choose to grow with. “In life, it’s not the titles that define us, but the connections we nurture and the wisdom we share.” So, let’s be mindful of the relationships we build this week and beyond. Let’s prioritize depth over superficiality, strength over showiness, and integrity over ambition.

When it comes down to it, the experiences we share and the connections we make will guide us on our journeys. So, let’s embrace the wisdom of those who’ve come before us while paving the way for new possibilities. Here’s to building a community that thrives on sharing knowledge and uplifting each other.

Have a great Thanksgiving!
