Wireless Connectivity & its Role in Digital Transformation

Opening thoughts: A Call to Arms
It is incredible – the amount of radical change in the wireless communications industry today is astounding. I’ve seen nothing like it during my twenty years working in the wireless world. All at once, the industry welcomed 5G, Wi-Fi 6 and Private Networking/CBRS, as well as quite a bit of new spectrum from C Band and mmWave. The combination of new technologies and more spectrum offers unprecedented speeds and capacity that players from every corner are racing to exploit. Add novel applications on top of this capability, and the result is transformative opportunities that change how businesses function and how people live their lives.
While this time is exciting, it can be hard for decision makers to understand and keep up with such dramatic change. This upcoming blog series will focus on wireless connectivity and its role in digital transformation. It is a complex topic, and for this reason, we divided the subject into four subsequent blogs that will cover key aspects one should consider to make the biggest difference for their organization.
Laying the foundation for the series is this principle thought: the changes at hand create opportunities for tech leaders, property owners, managers and developers to make incredible impacts for their businesses and communities, but it also increases the risk of making mistakes. (Nobody wants to invest millions of dollars in a solution that fails to live up to its potential or in technology that has to be ripped and replaced a few years down the road). I would argue that by going big in smart ways, you can avoid missteps and take advantage of the opportunities ahead.
What’s the key? Take incremental steps forward to test and learn, and get up to speed in three fundamental areas: spectrum, technology and applications.
Here are a few considerations for each to get you started on your journey:
· Spectrum – What bandwidth is available today? What is coming tomorrow? What solutions can new spectrum enable?
· Technology – What is 5G? What about 5G will help achieve organizational goals? Why is 5G significant for digital transformation?
· Applications – What solutions are successfully being deployed? How can I identify the most compelling use cases for my organization?
The following blogs will take an in-depth look at each of these topics and provide a practical roadmap for ensuring that each is accounted for in your digital transformation strategy.
Please join us next week for the second blog in this series on Leveraging Spectrum and Newly Available Frequencies.
