?
Prologue
In our rapidly evolving world, traditional psychology is struggling to meet the challenges of the present, such as the search for authentic meaning in our digital culture. In a digital culture where billions of people scroll through their social media feeds daily and AI chatbots carry on millions of conversations, traditional psychology is at a crossroads as people unknowingly lose their psychological freedom, autonomy and authentic meaning. Although today's psychological science collaborates with neuroscience and the medical world, it does not seem to integrate the complex, interconnected human relationships between organism, brain, self, consciousness and culture.
My forthcoming nonfiction book, "Wired to Be Free," an exploration of integral psychology, aims to address these issues and weave together the interrelated dynamics of brain, organism, consciousness, self, and culture.
I am attaching a preface, synopsis and a chapter from the book entitled: Chapter Eleven: The Digital Era's Sickness: Populism, the Dark Triad and the Collapse of Truth. ?and will hear your ideas and thoughts on this topic.

Synopsis
"Wired to Be Free" presents an integral approach to psychology that interweaves the self, culture, brain, organism and consciousness. Addressing the challenges of our time, the book aims to provide a comprehensive roadmap for discovering and applying authentic meaning by bridging critical knowledge gaps in our understanding of the human mind.
The book is organized into four sections, each introduced by a "Trial" motif that identifies key dilemmas and maintains a cohesive narrative. Exceptional case studies and imaginative scenarios enhance each chapter and bring the concepts to life.
Part I: Historical overview and challenges
This section traces the development of psychology and psychoanalysis, highlighting the scientific challenges in the study of subjective human experience. It examines Freud's journey from his attempt to establish scientific methods to his development of a hermeneutic, interpretative practice. The section concludes with an overview of contemporary therapies.
Part II: The magic of psychotherapy and redefining psychopathology
Using thought-provoking case studies, this part explores the hidden magic of psychotherapy. It redefines conventional psychopathological syndromes as developmental disorders of meaning making and offers new perspectives on integral psychology.
Part III: Brain, Consciousness and the Self
This part explores the intricate relationships between the brain, consciousness and the self and challenges the debate about their primacy by presenting the brain and the self as interconnected complex adaptive systems. Philosophical and existential issues such as free will, the nature of good and evil, and the psychological aspects of mortality are addressed. The final chapter looks at the rise of populism and the dark triad — narcissism, Machiavellianism and psychopathy — in today's political scene, exacerbated by the echo chambers and conformist algorithms of social media.
Part IV: The transformative potential of Integral Psychology
The final part explores the transformative potential of Integral Psychology. It introduces a tripartite division of the self into the deep self, the middle self and the higher self. The final chapter describes an applied five-stage transformational model that the author and his students have successfully implemented. This model focuses on dismantling toxic and meaning-blocking paradigms and uncovering authentic meaning.
Preface
Our brain: a complex and fascinating organ
The human brain is a marvel of complexity and adaptability that is constantly in motion and shapes our experiences. Contrary to popular belief, natural selection has not designed our brains specifically for thinking. Instead, our brain acts as the organism's chief conductor, orchestrating neural networks and creating new connections based on our experiences.
The brain as a complex adaptive system
Our brain is a complex adaptive system (CAS) that develops in synergy with another CAS — the self. Through their joint activities, the brain and the self evolve together. Even when it is not engaged in conscious activities such as problem solving or meditation, the brain remains active. Neurons fire spontaneously, connect and are activated, triggering memories and giving rise to dreams, insights and creative ideas.
Wired to be free: a paradoxical title
The title "Wired to be free" may seem paradoxical. After all, a wired mechanism is usually controlled by its design, not by its freedom. However, the remarkable plasticity of our brain allows for almost unlimited evolution. This plasticity allows us to break through automatic functions and integrate brain and self in a way that favors both adaptability and freedom.
The digital age: A new era of connectivity and complexity
We live in an extraordinary era, often referred to as the digital age. In this age, people often blur the boundaries between physical and virtual reality, between truth and misinformation. Rapid technological advances, global connectivity and constant negotiations over privacy and transparency define this age. This hyper-connected world promotes both individualism and hyper-socialization and raises questions about identity, authenticity and the future of human life.
Digital culture, characterized by social media, smartphones, artificial intelligence and the Internet of Things, has transformed communication, work, learning and perception. It offers opportunities for global collaboration and knowledge sharing, but also presents us with challenges such as information overload, digital addiction, privacy concerns and the rapid spread of misinformation. This era requires digital literacy and critical thinking to navigate an increasingly complex and interconnected global society.
In this context, understanding the interplay between the brain, consciousness and culture is crucial. Our brains contain vast amounts of information - evolutionary memories that have contributed to the survival of our ancestors, cultural unconsciousness that forms the basis of our shared beliefs and behaviors, and personal experiences that shape our individual selves. In "Wired to be Free, we explored these connections to develop more effective ways to promote human wellbeing in our complex, digital world.
Why Brain, Consciousness and Culture in Integral Psychology?
My career in clinical psychology spans four decades of clinical work and teaching. My fascination with the interplay of brain and consciousness has driven my work. I have come to realize that the brain and consciousness are interwoven in complex ways with the human organism, nature, the self, and cultures. A comprehensive understanding of the brain, organism, consciousness, self, and culture is essential for developing effective interventions to promote human well-being. This book aims to contribute to this understanding.

Chapter Eleven: The Digital Era's Sickness: Populism, the Dark Triad and the Collapse of Truth.
A Tale of Dystopia in the Digital Era
The Rise of Vincent Marcus
In the prosperous land of Veridonia, a charismatic leader named Vincent Marcus emerged as a beacon of change. At first he was welcomed as a reformer, a figure who promised unity and prosperity. With the support of an influential older politician who recognized Marcus' talent for persuasion and flair for success, he quickly rose to fame. With the favor of the people behind him, he took the lead and inspired even the skeptics with his visions of progress. But as his influence grew, his ambitions changed. The lure of power began to eclipse his former values, and his commitment to leadership turned into a relentless pursuit to perpetuate his rule.
Marcus understood that absolute control could be secured through a populist approach. In consultation with his advisors, he identified a large, frustrated section of society that felt marginalized and aggrieved. This group became the basis of his regime as he skillfully portrayed them as "the real people" oppressed by an elite class: the free press, the judiciary and anyone who challenged him. With his gift for demagoguery, Marcus incited these "true people" against his critics and portrayed himself as their only defender against the so-called "deep state" — an elitist cabal conspiring against their destiny. His ultimate weapon, however, was the digital age itself. Marcus orchestrated a vast digital apparatus known as the "Poison Cloud"," spinning a web of misinformation to silence his opposition.
This digital machine became infamous, its reach ubiquitous and its strategy ruthless: through a constant stream of falsehoods, it blurred all dissenting voices and turned them into slanderous caricatures. It created an echo chamber of loyalists who bitterly attacked anyone who questioned Marcus' authority and discredited opponents through scandal and distortion.
At the same time, Marcus attempted to enact far-reaching legal reforms aimed at eliminating the independence of the judiciary. He declared himself the sole arbiter of Veridonia’s welfare and attempted to disempower the courts, backed by a legislature full of loyalists who sought to secure his unchallengeable authority. Outraged by his brazen attempts, millions took to the streets in defense of democracy. Veridonia’s families fractured under this pressure, torn by loyalty and ideological conflict, while a fierce national debate about patriotism and betrayal gripped the country.
Veridonia’s crisis did not go unnoticed outside its borders. The neighboring factions sensed their chance and attacked, so that Veridonia was drawn into an exhausting war. Against all odds, the army fought bravely and showed unity despite the internal strife. Despite the lack of a coherent political direction, the Veridonian military remained resolute, united by comradeship and dedication. Social loyalty blossomed within the ranks, and officers banded together to rally the support of the country in hopes of making the military a symbol of civic unity.
A New Leader of Social Protest
Amid the political repression and corruption, a charismatic leader arose from Veridonia’s protest movement, inspiring the populace with a vision for a new future. This leader advocated for a unified and democratic vision, drawing together a coalition that bolstered the nation’s morale and garnered widespread support.
An Underground Protest Movement
A secret group, the Justice Lanterns", was formed to fight Marcus' iron grip on digital media. This underground network used cutting-edge artificial intelligence and psychological persuasion techniques to combat censorship and government corruption. Using AI-driven algorithms, the Justice Lanterns found the most effective ways to reach citizens while evading government surveillance by tailoring their messages to resonate with different communities. They developed compelling, truthful narratives that cut through Marcus' propaganda, invalidating Marcus' impact and encouraging citizens to engage at the grassroots level. Through coded messages, interactive virtual forums, and a digital network of secure nodes, the Justice Lanterns ignited a spark of resistance and rallied Veridonians under the unbreakable banner of truth.
Civil Society as an Alternative Government
With the central government paralyzed by corruption, Veridonia’s citizens formed local networks to address essential needs and promote welfare. These networks provided education, social support, and a semblance of government services, becoming a "state within a state." This alternative system underscored the resilience and resolve of Veridonia’s civil society to function independently of Marcus’s regime.
The Reconstruction of Veridonia
As Veridonia approached a turning point, the drafting of a new constitution became a daunting task, with representatives from all sections of society coming together to bridge deep divides and ensure human rights, checks on power and protection from authoritarianism. Under Marcus’s rule, state institutions had been hollowed out, but comprehensive reforms meant that the judiciary, police and military would now operate independently and serve the people rather than the leader. Although calls for accountability were widespread, there was always debate: some argued for trials to solve crimes against humanity, while others feared that retribution could fracture the fragile unity.
The economy, which had been reduced to rubble by corruption and mismanagement, was in need of comprehensive reconstruction with a focus on foreign investment, new industries and employment. The international community recognized Veridonia’s struggle and offered vital financial and humanitarian support. It pledged support for democratic institutions and set up commissions to investigate the crimes of Marcus and his loyalists.
A New Hope
The regime’s fall was swift yet decisive. Marcus and his inner circle were arrested, and Veridonia embarked on a difficult journey of healing and reconstruction. Though the path was daunting, the nation was united in its resolve to build a fairer, more equitable society. The scars of the Marcus era, however, would take time to heal. Division and mistrust lingered, yet, rising from the ashes of authoritarianism, Veridonia saw a new hope — one defined by empathy, integrity, and the shared pursuit of a just and prosperous future.
Epilogue: The Fragile Boundaries of Truth in a Digital Age
The Power of Digital Manipulation and AI
The case of Veridonia’s dystopia offers a glimmer of hope, but history shows that struggles against authoritarianism rarely end in clear, decisive victories. Even when regimes that dismantle democratic norms collapse, they often leave weakened institutions and fractured societies in their wake. When people become accustomed to authoritarianism, it becomes "normal" and they may come to accept or even defend — oppressive regimes. To overthrow such forces requires immense courage, resilience and unity.
Today, control is no longer based on physical force alone, but on the power to influence and shape perceptions. Social media has become a formidable weapon capable of distorting reality and dividing people into ideological factions. In this age, the spread of disinformation and the blurring of fact and fiction threaten the fabric of democratic societies. Truth, once anchored in shared facts, is now struggling to hold the own against narratives created by AI and amplified by social platforms that prioritize sensationalism over accuracy.
With each passing year, the instruments for creating, spreading and reinforcing falsehoods become more sophisticated. Leaders with the characteristics of the Dark Triad — narcissism, Machiavellianism and psychopathy — are presented with unprecedented opportunities. Today, such leaders can harness the power of AI-driven algorithms to generate persuasive misinformation that targets specific demographics and reinforces echo chambers. AI can fabricate news stories, create synthetic media, and even mimic public figures to construct alternate realities that resonate with followers and undermine genuine discourse.
The advent of generative AI has added a new dimension to this manipulation. AI-driven tools can produce realistic images, videos and even fake speeches in no time, making it almost impossible for the average citizen to distinguish between truth and fake. The better the algorithms become, the more personalized and convincing the disinformation becomes, reshaping perceptions and weaponizing the digital public sphere. Within these echo chambers, trust in traditional sources of truth such as academia, independent media and the judiciary is dwindling.
The Dark Triad's Historic Opportunity
For authoritarian-leaning leaders, this digital infrastructure presents a historic opportunity. Where traditional dictators relied on censorship or propaganda, modern leaders with Machiavellian tendencies can achieve control through the persuasive power of technology. They can blur the line between fact and fiction, disorienting the public, polarizing opinions, and silencing critics. By manipulating social networks and feeding their algorithms, they ensure that false narratives are continually reinforced, making it difficult for individuals to escape these "realities." It is no longer necessary to destroy information directly; instead, it is drowned in a sea of doubt and misdirection.

The Collapse of a Shared Reality
In Veridonia, as in the real world, the fabric of society crumbles when a shared understanding of truth disintegrates. As perceptions are manipulated, the sense of a shared reality essential to any democracy breaks down. People begin to live in parallel worlds, each shaped by carefully curated "facts" that serve the interests of those in power. Communities fragment, families split, and the very concept of “truth” becomes a casualty.
Hope in the midst of darkness
But even if the digital age brings new challenges, it also offers opportunities to fight back. History shows that truth can survive even in dark times, and there are those who resist, who strive to educate, organize and protect the integrity of democratic institutions. If Veridonia has a lesson to teach, it is that the survival of democracy depends not on the absence of corruption, but on the will of the people to recognize it, confront it, and restore the values that make a free society.
The old question endures: "Why do the wicked prosper?" The battle between truth and deception is timeless, but now that it is being played out on a digital battlefield, the stakes have never been higher. The future of Veridonia — and all societies — may depend not only on the defeat of authoritarian regimes, but also on our collective ability to distinguish fact from illusion, demand accountability and protect the fragile line between truth and falsehood.
Dark Triad and Populism: A Historical and Contemporary View
Throughout history, populist leaders who exhibit traits of the Dark Triad — narcissism, Machiavellianism and psychopathy — have had a significant influence on societies. In ancient Rome, Julius Caesar's charismatic leadership and narcissistic tendencies contributed to the downfall of the Roman Republic. In the 20th century, Adolf Hitler's rise to power in Germany showed the dangerous confluence of populism and Dark Triad characteristics. His charismatic speeches appealed to the masses, while his narcissism, Machiavellian tactics, and lack of empathy led to disastrous consequences.
Other examples include Stalin, Idi Amin, Pol Pot and Saddam Hussein. These leaders were known for their psychopathic ruthlessness, different levels of paranoia, absence of remorse and empathy, and a grandiose self-image. These historical examples illustrate how populist leaders with psychopathic traits can rise to power by exploiting societal grievances and manipulating public opinion, often with devastating consequences for democratic institutions and social cohesion.
The Dark Triad's Dark Appeal and Influence
The attraction of the Dark Triad traits lies in their multi-layered appeal and influence. Individuals with these traits often exude confidence and charisma, attracting followers who are drawn to their aura of strength and leadership. Their persuasive abilities enable them to communicate in a captivating way, gain support, and deliver attention-grabbing messages. The association of Dark Triad traits with dominance and control conveys an image of authority that resonates with those seeking strong leadership. The sensationalism surrounding these individuals often attracts media attention, further strengthening their influence and power. Politicians with dark triad characteristics may use polarizing rhetoric that creates a strong "us versus them" dynamic that attracts committed followers. In addition, traits such as self-promotion and manipulation lend themselves well to social media platforms, where attention-grabbing content thrives, amplifying their reach and impact.
The challenge of confronting Dark Triad Personality in society
The dark triad personality is a serious and profound personality disorder. It's unlikely that people with these characteristics will seek help due to the nature of these traits. Psychopaths generally only appear in the context of court-ordered interventions due to their impulsiveness and disregard for social norms. Machiavellians, who are skilled at manipulation, are unlikely to confide in a therapist as this would undermine their sense of control. Narcissists who are preoccupied with their self-image and sense of superiority usually avoid scenarios that might challenge their inflated self-esteem. When these traits come together in a single personality, the prospect of seeking therapy becomes even less likely.
When reality falls short of their expectations, individuals with Dark Triad traits may develop paranoid behavior, distrust others and demand loyalty, but inevitably lose trust in their confidants. Internally, they often suppress negative emotions and project them onto others as a defense mechanism against underlying anxiety and depression. Although some of them are professionally successful — especially in high-stakes environments such as politics — their personal lives are often characterized by deep emptiness and existential despair. This ultimately reveals the hollow nature of a life focused solely on power, manipulation and material gain, and underscores the limits of a purely narcissistic pursuit.
Mr. A as a Case Study: Unmasking the Dark Triad in the Making
Mr. A, a forty-year-old insurance agent raised as the sole child of Holocaust survivors, exhibited antisocial tendencies and narcissistic traits since childhood despite his school success.
Driven by an insatiable desire for material wealth, Mr. A achieved significant financial success through his insurance agency. However, a hidden depression lurked beneath his facade of brilliance, fueled by an existential void he attempted to fill with fleeting pleasures and material possessions.
The Roots of Mr. A's Dark Triad
Mr. A's upbringing, characterized by excessive permissiveness and overvaluation by his parents, laid the groundwork for his dark triad traits. Treated as a precious gem, Mr. A's parents inadvertently contributed to his narcissistic tendencies. Being the only child of Holocaust survivors, they viewed him as a messianic figure. Excessive parental adoration can inflate a child's self-esteem, it can also replace genuine attachment, leading to inflated narcissism. Children raised with a "hero myth" narrative, like Mr. A, are prone to creating and internalizing an idealized self-image, masking a core of despair and worthlessness rooted in a lack of genuine attachment during their childhood.
Mr. A's Developmental Journey
Mr. A's life trajectory exemplifies the formation of dark triad traits, shaped by his narcissistic upbringing and self-centered worldview. His perception of himself as the center of the universe, reinforced by his mother's excessive admiration, solidified his narcissistic tendencies.
The Culmination of Mr. A's Personality
Mr. A's life story illustrates the essence of the Dark Triad: a blend of charm, intelligence, destructive behaviors, and narcissistic traits. The Machiavellian aspect of his personality allowed him to manipulate clients and colleagues with ease, prioritizing personal gain over ethical considerations. His narcissistic tendencies fueled his relentless pursuit of wealth and status, while his psychopathic tendencies enabled him to disregard the emotional consequences of his actions. Despite his outward success, Mr. A's life is marked by a profound sense of emptiness and existential despair, highlighting the emptiness of a life solely focused on material possessions.
Helena Deutsch's "as-if personality"
In 1965, Helena Deutsch coined the term "as-if personality" to describe individuals who present a superficial facade of normalcy but lack genuine empathy and inner feelings. This concept applies to the Dark Triad personality. Deutsch noted such individuals are "intellectually impeccable" and can be productive, but that their work often lacks originality.
?
Application to politicians
In 1983, Roazen applied Deutsch's concept of the "as-if personality" to politicians, noting that their relationships with others often exhibit a superficial intensity that lacks genuine feelings or empathy. He suggested these politicians are unaware of their own inner emptiness and lack of genuine feelings.
Kohut identified four types of narcissistic needs that appear in dark triad populist leaders: approval- seeking, idealizing, twinship, and merging. Politicians with Dark Triad personalities often exploit these needs in their followers:
????????? Approval-Seeking: A narcissistic politician may seek approval by making grandiose promises or exaggerating accomplishments.
????????? Idealizing: A Machiavellian politician may take advantage of followers' idealizing needs by presenting himself as a strong and decisive leader.
????????? Twinship: A psychopathic politician may exploit the merging needs of his followers by creating a sense of shared identity and purpose.
The dark triad thrives in the digital culture
In today's cultural landscape, leaders and influencers with Dark Triad characteristics find fertile ground for their manipulation and influence due to the wide reach of social media platforms such as TikTok, Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook. These platforms provide them with a huge audience to exploit and amplify their ability to spread disinformation and propaganda.
These leaders use digital platforms effectively to communicate directly with their followers. They deliver complex messages in a simplified, concise form suitable for digital consumption. These leaders build strong narratives that resonate with their followers' worldviews, and use social media algorithms to increase their reach. By creating social polarization, they strengthen their supporter base, undermine the credibility of traditional media, strengthen their own role as a trusted source of information. Qualified followers detect any opposition and respond quickly to events and shape public discourse. They also foster online communities of followers that further solidify their messages.
The Tony Blair Institute's Global Populism Index (2024) finds that support for populist parties has increased significantly worldwide over the last ten years. Research (Bell Edward et al. 2021; Sandra J. Diller et al. 2021) on the influence of the Dark Triad on political success, looks at how the characteristics of the Dark Triad can predict political success in the context of social media. Social media appears to provide the forum, the digital city center in which individuals with these traits can excel in self-promotion and manipulation skills that may resonate with audiences in these fast-paced, impression-driven environments.
Both politicians and laypeople can easily spread fake news via social media by taking advantage of its fast and far-reaching dissemination capabilities. Unfortunately, truth has lost its value in our time, making fake news almost as legitimate as real information. Social media algorithms exacerbate this problem by prioritizing sensational content, facilitating the spread of fake news among those who believe it.
The pervasive influence of social media, combined with the algorithmic amplification of sensational content, contributes to the rapid spread of both true and false information. This phenomenon has raised concerns about the role of social media in shaping public discourse, political campaigns and even election outcomes. Disinformation, rumors and deliberately fabricated rumors are widespread, making it increasingly difficult for individuals to discern the veracity of the information they encounter.
Social media users are often susceptible to confirmation bias and tend to focus on information that aligns with their existing beliefs. This susceptibility makes them particularly vulnerable to fake news tailored to their political or ideological views.
In Western countries and beyond, individuals with Dark Triad characteristics are often in positions of influence and power. They can use the digital landscape to spread their populist agendas and manipulate public opinion. This intersection of personality pathology, populist interests, opportunities, worldviews and the digital age creates a unique environment in which individuals with Machiavellian, narcissistic and psychopathic traits can thrive, risking the demise of democracies and inflicting devastating consequences on peoples.
Breaking down of the influence of social media algorithms on populist leaders and characteristics of the Dark Triad
Maximizing engagement and emotional reactions
Social media algorithms maximize engagement and often favor content that elicits strong emotional responses. This unintentionally encourages sensationalist and polarizing content, which fits well with populist rhetoric and Dark Triad behaviors. Leaders who exhibit these traits can exploit this by crafting messages that provoke outrage or fear, increasing reach and engagement.
Spreading disinformation
The rapid spread of information on social media platforms makes them an ideal breeding ground for misinformation. Dark Triad individuals, especially those with a strong Machiavellian streak, can strategically use fake news to manipulate public opinion. Populist leaders often take advantage of this to create narratives that support their agenda, regardless of factual accuracy.
Echo chambers
Algorithms on social media tend to show users content that aligns with their existing views, creating echo chambers. This reinforces and potentially radicalizes beliefs, making people more susceptible to populist messages and less likely to encounter opposing viewpoints. For individuals with Dark Triad traits, these echo chambers provide a captive audience for manipulation.
Narcissistic validation
The constant feedback loop of likes, shares and comments on social media can encourage narcissistic tendencies. Populist leaders with pronounced narcissism find these platforms ideal for finding admiration and reinforcing their grandiose self-image.
Emotional manipulation
The focus on engaging content on social media favors emotionally charged messages. This aligns well with the tactics of populists and the manipulative tendencies of leaders possessing Dark Triad traits, enabling them to effectively exploit fears and grievances.
Bypassing the traditional media
Social media allows populist leaders to address directly with their followers, bypassing the control of traditional media. This direct communication channel can be particularly effective for those with Dark Triad characteristics, as it allows them to control their narrative without external fact-checking or criticism.
Rapid mobilization
The ability of social media to organize and mobilize large groups of people quickly is a powerful tool for populist movements. Leaders with Dark Triad characteristics can exploit this to create a sense of urgency and rally supporters to their cause.
Dehumanization and lack of empathy
The distance created by online interactions can exacerbate the lack of empathy characteristic of psychopathy. This can lead to more extreme rhetoric and a greater willingness to attack or dehumanize opponents.
Exploitation of confirmation bias
Dark Triad individuals in populist movements can exploit confirmation bias by tailoring their messages to reinforce the existing beliefs of their target audience. Social media algorithms amplify this by showing users content that aligns with their pre-existing views.
Exploiting crises
In times of crisis or uncertainty, people often look to social media for information. Populist leaders with Dark Triad traits can exploit these moments of vulnerability to spread their message and gain support, often by offering false simple solutions to complex problems.
So, what factors influence the course of events? On sober reflection, which can be quite daunting, the answer is: the better you master the characteristics of the dark triad without making mistakes, the more successful you are. The more successful a Machiavellian you are, the better you can control the dynamics of political forces. The more psychopathic you are, the easier you can ignore the suffering of your people, rob the resources of the state to bribe political elements that threaten you, or those who can support you, and thus consolidate your rule. The more narcissistic you are, the more you will believe that God has touched you and given you the mission said: "The country is me," and that you can enjoy all the benefits of power without regard to the people who elected you, because it all belongs to you.
Here lies a much more destructive danger. Your behavior within the dark triad can lead to the rise of messianic forces that believe in your divine mission, creating a cult-like effect that can spread like wildfire with the help of social media algorithms. This view is destructive as it does not aim to improve the situation, but to make it worse. The worsening of the situation leads to messianic pangs, pain or apocalypse, because the greater the suffering, the closer the redemption.
"So, what can anchor us in a world where truth and falsehood are indistinguishable, and where the pace of social and political change is dizzying?
Our foundation lies in the primal drives instilled by natural selection: survival, attachment, and search/reward. These drives, while shared with other species, form the bedrock of human society. Yet, those with the Dark Triad personality twist these drives into paranoia, manipulation, and narcissism in their minds.
However, these same drives can also be forces for good. Survival fosters cooperation and community. Attachment breeds love and empathy, and the search/reward drives innovation and progress. When we delve into the authentic meaning of our lives, as we do in the following part of the book, we discover a core self connected to universal human experiences. This core is resistant to manipulation and empowers us to discern between truth and falsehood.
Today, navigating this complex world requires a delicate balance of skepticism and hope. While technology presents unprecedented challenges, it also offers extraordinary opportunities for understanding and connection. By grounding ourselves in our fundamental humanity, integrated with the higher aspects of our culture, we can withstand the storms of disinformation and emerge better than ever before in history.
