Winter Leagues Report: Week 8
The Cubs system was sparsely represented this week in the winter leagues, but did include an outstanding performance from pitcher Williams Perez. This week's report also saw the Cubs debut of newly signed left-handed pitcher Dario Alvarez.
Dominican Winter League
Toros del Este
Dominican Winter League basement dwellers Este got a lift on Saturday when they broke out the bats and defeated Orientales 7-4. After starter Cory Riordan allowed three runs in the first and ran out of gas following the fourth inning, lefty Dario Alvarez had a strikeout and set down the only two batters he faced in the fifth. Mexican Pacific League
Tomateros de Culiacan
Struggling to find their way in the second half, Culiacan dropped a 6-5 decision to Mazatlan on Tuesday. Ali Solis started at catcher and was 1-for-3 in the loss. Mazatlan 6 - Culiacan 5
Venezuelan Winter League
Cardenales de Lara
Lara kept themselves in the conversation for the VWL’s top spot in Monday’s spotlight game with a 10-4 victory over La Guaira. Williams Perez had another good start for the Redbirds, blanking the Tiburones for six innings on three hits and four walks, striking out six batters. Lara 10 - La Guaira 4
Tigres de Aragua
Aragua was able to hold on tight to an early lead on Tuesday as they defeated Anzoategui 3-2. Carlos Penalver started at second base and batted second, going 1-for-3 with a run scored in the win. Aragua 3 - Anzoategui 2
With a doubleheader split on Friday, the Tigers regained a share of first place in the VWL. In Game 2, a three-run fifth inning put the game out of reach as Aragua defeated Margarita 5-1. Carlos Penalver once again was at second base and although he went 0-for-2, Penalver drew a walk and scored a run. Aragua 5 - Margarita 1
Australian Baseball League
Canberra Cavalry
On Thursday, Canberra evened their record to 4-4 by whopping Adelaide 18-3. Ryan Kalish played left field and began to heat up at the plate, going 2-for-6 with two RBI and a run scored. Canberra 18 - Adelaide 3
The Cavalry split a doubleheader on Saturday with Adelaide. In Game 2,Ryan Kalish was 1-for-3 with a double and a run scored in a 4-2 loss. Adelaide 4 - Canberra 2

The Chicago Cubs signed LHP Dario Alvarez. Alvarez is currently playing for Toros del Este in the Dominican Winter League.
