Winter is Coming! How to Choose the Right Air Source Heat Pump for Warmth and Comfort?

As the temperature drops, many homeowners are looking for the ideal heating solution for the colder months. With its safety, energy efficiency, high performance, and comfort, the air source heat pump has become one of the most popular choices for home heating.

So, how do you determine the correct size of the heat pump to ensure optimal heating performance? And how can you choose the right model that is both powerful and efficient for your home?

1. Calculate the Required Heating and Cooling Load for the Room

Using the area indicator method, calculate the required cooling/heating capacity of the room based on the room area and cooling/heating load estimation indicators.

It is important to note that the insulation performance varies across different types of buildings. When calculating the required heating and cooling loads for a room, this should be considered comprehensively. A uniform estimate for heating and cooling loads should not be applied. For example, buildings such as gyms and competition halls, which have poor insulation, typically use a heat load estimate of 120-150W/m2. In contrast, apartments and residential buildings with better insulation perform better and are typically calculated with a heat load estimate of 50-80W/m2.

The estimation of cooling and heating load indicators for each building can refer to the following table:

Note: This table is only used as a reference indicator, and there may be slight differences between different regions. It needs to be considered comprehensively based on regional factors, building insulation performance, and building usage.

2. Selecting the Right Heat Pump Model Using Performance Curves and Operating Condition Charts

Under varying operating conditions, the actual heating capacity and performance of a heat pump can differ. Therefore, after calculating the required heating and cooling loads for a room, it is essential to compare the heat pump's performance under different conditions using its operating condition chart and performance curves to choose the appropriate model.

Taking a residential building in Europe as an example, the total area of the room is 120 square meters. In winter, the outdoor temp is -20 ℃ and the room temp is -5 ℃. The customer want to heat the room to +20 ℃, please calculate the appropriate model and quantity of the R290 heat pump series?

Step 1:

Take its heat load index as 70W/㎡, and calculate the total heat load demand Q=120 × 80=9.6KW

Step 2:

Query the R290 series heat pumps of POOL WORLD, and analyze the variable operating conditions table and curve chart of PW060. When the default water outlet temperature is 35 ℃ and the outdoor temperature is -20 ℃, it’s maximum heating capacity is 10.3KW, which meets the load requirements. Therefore, select one PW060 unit, the model is PW060-DKZLRS-E.
