Winter in the City fires up the City Centre
City Renewal Authority
The ACT Government’s City Renewal Authority is charged with shaping the growth of the central parts of Canberra.
We’re already into the second week of Winter in the City and Canberrans and visitors continue to blaze into the City Centre to experience all that’s on offer.
‘Fire’ has taken the front seat in this year’s event, with 200 to 400 people attending each of the three nightly shows in Garema Place. With 48 shows in total, there’s plenty of excitement to get the crowds fired up.
Fire shows provide boost to local business
Peter Barclay, owner of local pub King O’Malley’s, praised the shows as “absolutely breathtaking” and says they are providing a much-needed boost to local businesses.
“The fire performances are sensational, especially the finale,” Mr Barclay said. “It’s almost like sparkles and fireworks are coming out of the performers’ hands.
“It's been a real success and fantastic for city businesses. Being a free show is great in the current climate. People have the flexibility to choose where to dine, before or after the performance. Whether it’s a restaurant or a pub, they’ve been entertained and ready to explore what the city offers.”
Ice rink proves to be a hit in Glebe Park
Not only has Garema Place come alive every evening but skaters have been seen taking to the ice in the beautiful landscape of Glebe Park for the first time.
With more than 5,000 tickets sold so far, the ice rink still holds a special place for Canberrans of all ages.
What's On Guide showcases City Centre businesses
This year’s digital What’s On Guide showcases the City Centre and Braddon’s best business offers. Canberrans and visitors are taking advantage of great winter deals, entertainment and activities with more than 50 businesses getting involved and more than 2000 offers already redeemed.
The Authority’s advertising campaign has clocked more than 5 million impressions, driving visitors within Canberra’s regional tourism market to enjoy the city spectacle.
Winter in the City: Fire and Ice has already seen thousands experience the ice rink and fire performances, not to mention the many nearby cafes, restaurants, bars and shops. But don’t miss out on the fun – explore what’s on and start planning your weekend.
