Winter Central Heating Checklist ?

Winter Central Heating Checklist ?

As the cold weather approaches, it’s important to make sure your central heating system is ready to keep your home warm and energy-efficient. This checklist will not only help you stay comfortable this winter but also reduce the risk of damp, mould, and condensation while improving your indoor air quality.

1. Check Boiler Pressure

Ensure your boiler’s pressure is between 1.0 and 1.5 bar. Low pressure can prevent your heating from working properly, while high pressure can lead to potential breakdowns or safety risks. If pressure nears 3 bar, the safety valve may trigger, releasing excess pressure. Always recheck the boiler pressure after bleeding radiators to ensure it's within the safe range.

2. Turn on Your Room Thermostat

Set your thermostat to an efficient temperature:

  • Ideal temperature for comfort: 18-21°C is recommended.
  • Energy saving: Turning your thermostat down by just 1°C above 21°C can save you approximately 10% on your heating bills.

A programmable or smart thermostat allows you to schedule heating times to match your routine, maximizing comfort while saving energy.

3. Check Radiators heat

If your radiator is cold at the top, it likely needs bleeding to release trapped air.

If your radiator is cold at the bottom, this usually indicates sludge buildup, which can reduce efficiency. A professional power flush may be needed to clear the system.

Tip: After bleeding radiators, always recheck boiler pressure, as it may drop during the process.

4. Clean Your Radiators

Dust and dirt buildup on your radiators can reduce their efficiency. A clean radiator can improve its heat output by up to 25%, so be sure to give them a good clean before winter.

5. Bleed Radiators and Re-pressurise the Boiler

Bleeding your radiators releases trapped air and helps them heat up more effectively. After doing this, recheck and re-pressurise the boiler to ensure it stays within the correct range (1.0-1.5 bar.)

6. Check Your Thermostatic Radiator Valve (T.R.V) Settings

Thermostatic Radiator Valves (T.R.Vs) allow you to control the temperature in each room independently:

  • 1: Approx. 12°C (frost protection)
  • 2: Approx. 16°C (cooler rooms)
  • 3: Approx. 20°C (living spaces)
  • 4: Approx. 24°C (warmer rooms)
  • 5: Over 26°C (rarely needed) Use where the room thermostat is.

Recommended T.R.V Settings Per Room:

  • Bedrooms: 2-3 (16-20°C) for a comfortable sleeping environment.
  • Living Room: 3 (20°C) for cozy warmth.
  • Hallways and Bathrooms: 2-3 (16-20°C) to prevent cold drafts and condensation.

7. Get Your Boiler Serviced

An annual boiler service ensures your heating system operates safely and efficiently. A well-maintained boiler not only prevents unexpected breakdowns but also extends the lifespan of the system, saving you money in the long run.
