In 2004 , when passing through one of my depressive episodes I came across nicherin daishonin Buddhism , some of you might know it as Nam Myo ho renge kyo .
One of the lines which has stayed with me is
Winter always turns to spring
Yesterday was basant panchami , the celebration of coming of spring , the end of winter .
I researched how trees survive winters and what can I learn from it
1. Shedding leaves : trees lose water through leaves , so they shed their leaves . The learning for us is that when going through adversity , depression we need to protect and conserve our energy , and let go of all that and all those who are not serving us or deplete our energy .
2. Dormancy : Starting autumn the trees start going into hibernation , they slow down . The metaphor for us is to slow down , not to run away or numb pain , sit with it . Resting and self nurturing can be an amazing practice .
3. Sweet Sap : Trees in cold climes develop a sugary syrup within so that the water within does not freeze , maple syrup comes from here .The metaphor is to not let our circumstances make us hard , make us numb , make us bitter . The syrup for this is faith , hope , forgiveness , compassion and self love .
Covid has been a long winter in many ways for many of us , let this spring be the beginning of new dreams , new hopes , blessed with wisdom and power from maa saraswati
So it is now
