Winning in the Workplace - The Need for Visibility

Winning in the Workplace - The Need for Visibility

We’re taking a short break from the values series to talk about another important ingredient for winning in the workplace. Visibility.

Many professionals have this love-hate relationship with visibility. They wish to be seen but hate the thought of what they consider contriving to make it happen. They want their work to speak for them, but it doesn’t speak loudly enough to get them noticed as soon as they want. So, they are left in a quandary. How do they get noticed because their work is good and not because of any "gimmicks"?

Visibility in the workplace is not merely about being seen; it's about leaving an indelible mark through your contributions, building meaningful connections, and propelling your career forward.

Let's explore the nuances of this concept, debunk misconceptions, and unveil strategies for cultivating healthy visibility.

Workplace visibility encompasses the degree to which an employee's presence, contributions, and impact are recognized within the organization. It goes beyond mere physical presence; it's about actively engaging with colleagues, showcasing skills, and creating a positive professional reputation.

For example: A visible employee is not just a passive participant in meetings but an active contributor. They share insights, ask thoughtful questions, and contribute valuable ideas. This participation builds a reputation for engagement and as a result, enhances visibility.

To do a recap about some misconceptions about visibility…

·?????? Visibility is NOT Self-Promotion. Genuine visibility is about showcasing your skills, contributions, and ideas rather than merely drawing attention to oneself.

?·?????? Visibility is NOT Quantity Over Quality: it is not about constantly being in the spotlight, attending every meeting, or participating in every project. In reality, it's about the quality of your contributions and the impact you make rather than sheer quantity.

?·?????? Visibility is NOT just for Extroverts: Introverted individuals might think that workplace visibility is reserved for extroverts who are naturally more outgoing. In truth, effective visibility is about finding authentic ways to express your strengths, whether you're introverted or extroverted.

·?????? Visibility does NOT trump Competence: Visibility is to SHOWCASE and not REPLACE actual job performance. It complements competence and excellence in one's role.

?·?????? Visibility is NOT all about networking: While networking is a part of visibility, it's not the sole component. You need to consistently deliver quality work, express ideas, and engage with your team.

·?????? Visibility is NOT reserved for higher ranks in the organization: It is valuable at all levels of an organization.

?Building Blocks for Visibility

1. Mastering Your Craft

Healthy visibility begins with expertise. Strive to become the go-to person in your area of expertise. Share your knowledge through presentations, workshops, or mentoring opportunities.

2. Effective Communication

Communicate clearly and confidently. Whether in meetings, emails, or informal interactions, learn how to effectively articulate your thoughts. A well-phrased idea will always resonate with listeners.

3. Collaborative Mindset

Actively collaborate with colleagues across departments. Participate in cross-functional projects, demonstrating your ability to work seamlessly with diverse teams.

4. Thought Leadership

Become a thought leader by sharing insights on industry trends, innovations, or best practices. This can be through writing articles, blog posts, or contributing to professional forums.

I really can’t oversell workplace visibility! Here are just a few advantages:

?Your contributions are recognized so you’re motivated to consistently deliver high-quality work.

?Visibility is a catalyst for career advancement. Because he or she gets noticed, a visible professional stands out when growth opportunities arise.

?Visible professionals naturally develop influence, which is a valuable asset in driving initiatives, garnering support for ideas, and shaping workplace culture.

?

Building healthy visibility means you are intentional in your actions, and you focus on nurturing authentic connections. Now, your work will begin to speak louder!

Visibility is not a sprint; it's a marathon where consistency, quality, and a genuine commitment to growth will pave the way to contributing to the collective success of your team and organization.

Don’t hide your light. Shine!

Great piece! Oluwatoyin Puddicombe ACIPM SPHRi CCA . I will add "Be the PLUG " for something. This goes beyond your current scope. Find a need/gap and be the "go-to". This can range from updates on trending competitor news to support with PowerPoint presentations for leaders who struggle with this.

Active engagement requires some commitment of genuine interest that so many people aren't ready or just simply unable to give. While hardwork and dedication at work are simple traits to have, value doesn't come cheep.
