Winning in the Workplace with I-TALENT: N for Networking

Hello and welcome to March!

Over the past few weeks, we’ve talked about the values we uphold in the T3 Community as captured by the acronym…you know it by now…I-TALENT!

Let's refresh ourselves on what each letter represents…

I for Integrity

T for Taking Ownership

A for Attitude

L for Learning

E for Excellence

N for Networking

T for Thrive

We’ve covered I through E so now we cast our gaze on N which stands for Networking…but we'll be looking at a slightly less emphasized area.

As professionals, we’ve often heard about the importance of building new connections, attending events, and expanding our networks. While these strategies are undeniably valuable, there's one aspect of networking that often gets overlooked: tapping into our existing social and professional circles.

?

The Overlooked Goldmine of Your Current Network

Job seekers tend to focus their efforts on making new connections while neglecting the treasure trove of opportunities that lie within their current networks. Think about it: you've already built relationships with family, colleagues, mentors, classmates, and friends who know your strengths, skills, and aspirations. Why not leverage these connections to uncover new opportunities and advance your career?

Let me share a few tips on how.

1.??? Update Your LinkedIn Profile: Start by updating your LinkedIn profile to reflect your current goals, skills, and achievements. Your profile serves as your professional brand, so make sure it accurately portrays who you are and what you bring to the table.

2.??? Reach Out to Former Colleagues: Reconnect with former colleagues and supervisors whom you've built relationships with in the past. Let them know about your career aspirations and ask if they have any insights or opportunities they can share.

3.??? Attend Alumni Events: Alumni networks are a valuable resource for job seekers at all stages of their careers. Attend alumni events, join alumni groups on LinkedIn, and reach out to fellow alumni to tap into this supportive community.

4.??? Utilize social media: Don't underestimate the power of social media platforms like LinkedIn, Twitter, and Facebook for networking. Join relevant groups and discussions, share valuable content, and engage with your connections to expand your reach.

5.??? Offer Value: Networking is a two-way street. Instead of focusing solely on what you can gain from your connections, think about how you can add value to them. Offer your expertise, insights, or assistance whenever possible to strengthen your relationships.

?

Networking isn't just for job seekers—it's a lifelong skill that's essential for success at every stage of your career, from entry-level to the C-suite. Here's why:

Career Exploration: Networking allows you to explore different industries, roles, and career paths by connecting with professionals who have firsthand experience in those areas.

Professional Development: Building relationships with mentors, advisors, and peers can provide valuable guidance, feedback, and support as you navigate your career journey.

Identifying Opportunities: Networking opens doors to new opportunities, whether it's a job opening, a speaking engagement, a partnership opportunity, or a potential collaboration. By expanding your network, you increase your chances of stumbling upon these hidden gems.

Personal Branding: Your network is a reflection of your brand. By cultivating strong relationships and showcasing your expertise and value, you enhance your reputation and credibility within your industry.

?

Remember, your existing relationships are a valuable asset that can provide support, guidance, and opportunities throughout your career journey. So, take the time to nurture these connections, offer value, and watch as your network becomes an invaluable resource for your professional growth and success.
