The winning team
This article highlights the fact that successful teams are not as easily formed as we think and often go through a four-step process to be optimal.
The first phase called the "training stage" is where it is necessary to establish an environment conducive to the involvement of all. This results in creating a sense of belonging to the group, highlighting good reasons to get involved, the establishment of a common framework, the favoring of building relationships between participants and the provocation of early debates.
Follow then the "turbulence stage" in which it is essential to manage the initial crisis to establish a collaborative environment. It is important then to guard against the "take control" temptation. The approach to follow is rather to guide the team in resolving disagreements and not leave anyone by the wayside. At the same time you should manage the risk of clans formation and exercise authority if they try to block the process.
Then comes the "stage of normalization" of interactions where it's important to focus the collective energy on research performance. For this, the leader must channel the collective energy in the right direction while pushing the team to come out of his comfort zone.
Now we come to the last phase called the "performance stage" where maintaining the motivation is essential. To do this, it is important to manage three risks: the complacent, the repercussions of an excessive enthusiasm and the one related to the failure's impact.
