Winning as a Team

Winning as a Team

It’s an Olympic year and thousands of world-class athletes are vying for top honors in Paris.? Team events hold a special allure for me. What does it take for a team to reach the podium and be recognized as the best of the best?

  • Character

In team sports, individual egos must be set aside. For instance, primary ball handlers might need to learn how to play off the ball to benefit the team.

Business lesson: Select for attitude, train for altitude. Building a successful team starts with choosing individuals who have the right mindset and are willing to put the team first. Skills can be developed, but a positive and cooperative attitude is essential from the start.

  • Talent

Among Olympians, the differences in talent are often minimal. Fine margins can determine the outcome of a competition.

Business lesson: Focus on harnessing complementary skills that give the team a competitive edge. It’s not just about having talented individuals but ensuring that their skills complement each other to create a stronger, more cohesive unit.

  • Knowledge

A deep understanding of the playbook, each team member’s role, and the competition is crucial. This knowledge allows the team to play to their strengths and outsmart their opponents.

Business lesson: Knowledge sharpens competence and boosts confidence. Ensuring that every team member understands their role and the overall strategy enhances performance and builds confidence.

  • Good Coaching

Good coaching is critical. The decisions made by coaches can significantly shape the outcomes.

Business lesson: If you are the team leader, be willing to make the unpopular call if you’re convinced it gives the team the best chance to win. Leadership sometimes requires making tough decisions that may not be popular but are in the best interest of the team.

  • Favor/ Good Luck

Despite careful preparation, sometimes the playing field is tilted by events beyond our control e.g. injuries, botched handoffs, missed calls, or beneficial matchups.

Business lesson: Do your best to minimize “unforced errors”, hope for the best, and play the hand you are dealt. While luck can play a role, focusing on what you can control and preparing meticulously can help mitigate unforeseen challenges and seize opportunities.

In conclusion, winning as a team requires a blend of character, talent, knowledge, effective coaching, and a bit of luck. These elements not only define success in sports but also offer valuable lessons for achieving excellence in business.
