Achieving Success in Life by Shifting How You See Things

Life is Full of Challenges and Opportunities

How we tackle them often decides whether we succeed or not.

The idea ‘How to win in life when you change how you see things’ comes from the world of spying and intelligence, and it means moving from looking at things in a narrow, personal way to seeing the bigger picture.

Over the past two decades, I have undertaken independent studies in the fields of warfare, espionage, and intelligence, driven by a thirst for knowledge and personal growth and how these skills can help me win in life.

I intend to share what I've gleaned and how I apply this knowledge in my daily life to assist you in achieving success.

In the mid-'90s, after completing my school, I was determined to embark on an extraordinary journey. My aspiration was to join the Air Force and become a pilot.

To pursue this dream, I enrolled in an aeronautical engineering and flight school, where I was thrust into an entirely new world.

Little did I know, this was the place where the concept of viewing life from a different perspective would take root.

The training was brutal and unforgiving, pushing me to my limits. It was in those trying moments that I truly discovered what I was capable of.

My outlook on life transformed in profound ways, but little did I know that more significant changes were on the horizon.

Understanding How We See Things

Before we get into how changing our perspective can help, let's first understand what I mean by perception and perspective:

  • Perception: This is how we immediately understand things based on our senses and personal beliefs. It's often about our feelings and is influenced by what we already think. Our perception can sometimes be too limited, and it can make us make quick decisions that we might later regret.

During one of my early training flights, I encountered a high-pressure situation during a complex maneuver. My immediate perception was that I was losing control of the aircraft, and panic began to set in. My senses were overwhelmed by the feeling of disorientation and fear. In that moment, my perception told me to react quickly and make drastic adjustments to regain control, which could have resulted in a dangerous situation.

  • Perspective: On the other hand, perspective means stepping back and looking at the bigger picture. It's about thinking about different points of view and understanding the whole situation. Perspective is more about thinking clearly, fairly, and understanding everything better.

My training emphasized the importance of maintaining a calm and calculated perspective, even in the face of intense pressure. I reminded myself to step back mentally and take in the bigger picture. I realized that the disorientation I was experiencing was a part of the training exercise, designed to challenge and improve my skills. By adopting this perspective, I was able to regain my composure and remember the specific techniques I had learned to handle such situations. I considered different viewpoints, evaluated the entire scenario, and made more rational decisions based on a clear understanding of the training's purpose.

Altering your perspective can substantially improve your life's trajectory by opening up new possibilities and offering fresh insights. It allows you to navigate challenges with greater clarity and adaptability, ultimately leading to greater personal growth and success.

The Power of Changing How You See Things

Making Better Choices: Shifting from perception to perspective is like switching from a narrow flashlight to a big, bright light. It helps you see things more clearly and make better choices. When you stick to perception, you might judge quickly and act based on your emotions. But with perspective, you can get more information, think about different ways of seeing things, and think carefully before making choices. This helps you avoid making quick decisions that you might later regret.

Scientific Insight: Research from cognitive psychology suggests that taking a broader perspective can improve decision-making and problem-solving skills. By engaging in reflective thinking, you can reduce cognitive biases and make more informed choices.

Practical Exercise: Next time you face a challenging decision, try this:

  1. Write down your initial perceptions and feelings.
  2. Step back and list out different perspectives or viewpoints.
  3. Compare the two lists and make your decision based on a comprehensive understanding.

Solving Problems Better: Life is full of problems and challenges. Some of them might seem too big to handle if you only look at them from your narrow point of view. But when you look at them from a bigger perspective, you can understand them better. You can break down tough problems into smaller parts and make good plans to solve them. This helps you deal with challenges confidently and creatively.

Example: Consider how Nelson Mandela maintained his perspective despite years of imprisonment. His ability to see beyond his immediate suffering and envision a united South Africa was pivotal to his success as a leader and his country's transformation.

Better Communication: Sometimes, our way of seeing things leads to misunderstandings and arguments. You might not understand what others mean or say because you see things only from your own point of view. But when you change to a broader perspective, you become better at talking to others. You listen well, understand how they feel, and think about their point of view. This makes your conversations with others more effective and friendly.

Practical Exercise: Practice active listening. When someone is talking, listen carefully. Don't judge or respond quickly. Take your time to understand what they're saying and think about their point of view before you reply.

Planning Smartly: Success often needs long-term plans and goals. If you only focus on perception, you might only think about short-term gains and not the big picture. But with perspective, you can set good, meaningful goals and make plans for your life. You can see the steps you need to take to reach your goals and adjust your plans when things change.

Example: Businesses that adopt a long-term perspective tend to perform better. Companies like Amazon and Google are known for their strategic long-term planning, which has contributed significantly to their sustained success.

Less Stress and Worry: Changing to a bigger perspective can also make us less stressed and worried. When you only look at things with perception, you might worry too much about things you can't control. Perspective reminds us to focus on what we can change and not worry too much about the rest. It helps you stay calmer and handle life's challenges better.

Scientific Insight: Studies show that mindfulness and perspective-taking can reduce stress and improve overall well-being. Techniques like meditation and reflective journaling are effective ways to practice this.

Applying This Shift in Different Parts of Life

In Your Business and Financial Success: In the world of business and finance, adopting a perspective-driven mindset is invaluable. It allows you to grasp market trends and anticipate changes, enabling you to make strategic financial decisions. Whether you're an entrepreneur, investor, or simply managing your finances, this perspective helps you approach money matters with wisdom and foresight. It also enhances your ability to collaborate with others, make prudent investments, and navigate financial complexities with confidence.

In Leadership and Team Dynamics: In leadership roles, adopting a perspective-driven mindset fosters effective team management and harmonious working relationships. It allows you to acknowledge diverse viewpoints within your team, thereby improving decision-making, communication, and overall team performance.

Example: Leaders who practice perspective-taking are better at resolving conflicts and motivating their teams. For instance, Satya Nadella's leadership at Microsoft is often highlighted for his empathetic and inclusive approach, which has significantly boosted the company's culture and performance.

In Your Job and Success: In your work life, it's important to see the big picture. Perspective helps you understand what's happening in your job, predict changes, and make smart career choices. It also helps you work well with your colleagues, lead teams, and handle office situations wisely.

Practical Exercise: Set long-term career goals and break them down into actionable steps. Regularly review and adjust these plans to stay aligned with your overarching career vision.

In Your Relationships: Changing from perception to perspective can improve your relationships. You can understand your partners, friends, and family members better by thinking about how they see things and how they feel. This can lead to better and happier connections with others. It also helps you deal with problems calmly and find solutions that work for everyone.

Practical Exercise: Practice empathy by putting yourself in others' shoes. Consider their feelings and viewpoints, especially during conflicts, to find common ground and resolve issues amicably.

For Your Personal Growth: If you want to improve yourself and grow, you need a bigger perspective. When you only see yourself in a small way, you might resist change or feel bad about yourself. But with perspective, you can embrace change, recognize your strengths, and work on your weaknesses. It helps you set good life goals and track your progress.

Scientific Insight: Personal growth is often linked to a growth mindset, which involves seeing challenges as opportunities for development rather than obstacles. This mindset shift is closely related to adopting a broader perspective.

For Your Health: Staying healthy often depends on the choices we make and our habits. If you only look at things from a small point of view, you might make unhealthy choices or be too stressed. Changing to a perspective-minded way of thinking helps you make smart choices about your diet, exercise, and mental health. It encourages you to think about long-term health instead of quick fixes.

Scientific Insight: Research has shown that adopting a long-term perspective can significantly improve health outcomes. For example, a study published in the journal Health Psychology found that individuals who focused on future health benefits rather than immediate gratification were more likely to maintain healthy habits such as regular exercise and a balanced diet. This shift in perspective can reduce stress and improve overall well-being, as it encourages sustainable lifestyle changes over quick, temporary fixes. You can find more details about the relationship between long-term perspective and health outcomes in the Health Psychology journal.

For Managing Your Money: Being good with money is connected to perspective. Instead of spending without thinking or barely having enough money, a perspective-focused way of thinking helps with budgeting, saving, and planning for the future. It helps you make smart financial choices, set financial goals, and build wealth over time.

Scientific Insight: A study in the Journal of Economic Psychology found that individuals who adopt a long-term financial perspective tend to save more and invest wisely. This mindset shift can reduce impulsive spending and encourage more prudent financial planning, leading to greater financial stability and security.

In Time Management and Productivity:

Managing time efficiently and boosting productivity often hinges on perspective. By understanding your long-term objectives and setting meaningful, achievable goals, you can prioritize tasks effectively and make the most of your time. A perspective-focused approach ensures that you stay on track and adapt your strategies as circumstances evolve, optimizing your productivity.

Practical Steps to Embrace Perspective

How can you actually do it in your daily lives? Here are some practical steps:

  • Practice Empathy: Put yourself in others' shoes and try to understand their feelings and viewpoints. This can improve your relationships and communication.
  • Listen Actively: When someone is talking, listen carefully. Don't judge or respond quickly. Take your time to understand what they're saying and think about their point of view before you reply.
  • Engage in Critical Thinking: Encourage critical thinking by evaluating your beliefs and assumptions. Ask yourself why you hold certain views and if they stand up to scrutiny.
  • Conflict Resolution Skills: Develop skills for resolving conflicts peacefully and productively. This can enhance your ability to handle disagreements with a perspective-driven approach.
  • Get Different Opinions: When you need to make decisions, ask different people for their opinions. Think about what different people say and gather information from different experts or people involved. This helps you make better choices.
  • Set Long-Term Goals: Have clear, long-term goals for different parts of your life, like your job, relationships, and personal growth. Make a plan to achieve these goals and review and adjust your plans regularly.
  • Stay Open-Minded: Challenge your own ideas and beliefs. Be open to the idea that you might be wrong or that there might be a better way to do things. Being open-minded helps you see new perspectives.
  • Learn from Different Cultures: Explore cultures and perspectives that are different from your own. Travel or engage with diverse communities to broaden your worldview.
  • Manage Stress: Use techniques like mindfulness, meditation, or exercise to handle stress. These can help you stay calm, even when things are tough.
  • Foster Resilience: Building emotional resilience can help you keep a clear perspective in challenging situations. Practice resilience-building techniques to stay focused and composed.
  • Reflect Often: Take time to think about your decisions and experiences. Consider what you've learned and how you can use those lessons in the future.

Success in life is more than just luck or chance. It's about having a way of thinking that lets you see more than just what's in front of you and understand the bigger picture. By changing how you see things, you can make better choices, solve problems well, communicate better, plan smartly, and be less stressed.

This change doesn't happen overnight, but it's a journey of self-improvement. Embracing a bigger perspective can make your life more rewarding and fulfilling.
