When you experience curveballs or changes in your work, life, or the balance of those two things then you often can be thrown off or triggered. You are needing to focus on things that were not planned, feeling somewhat stressed and/or anxious, and thereby letting things slip by the wayside that otherwise you would have been on top of.
As leaders when you are faced with fires it is ever more important to have systems, processes, and people in place to help support the day to day mission of the organization while you focus on putting out the fire.
It also means that as a leader you need to stay adaptable in order to face the shifts in schedule, time, and focus that are needed especially in trying times like when Covid hit.
So how do you do that? Well according to the Harvard Business Review article 5 Principles to Guide Adaptive Leadership it takes the following 4 skills:
Being adaptable can be a challenge but if you stay nimble in trying times and focus on shifting and continuous learning and development you will be able to guide yourself and your organization to a more steady state again.
