#Winners and #Losers: The Mummy Part II
The Week in Brexits
Winner: Team England—got to leave the World Cup with its head held high following a heartbreaking 2-1 loss to Croatia. It was the English side’s best showing since 1990. And they got to lose without having to flub a penalty shootout. #AbsolutelyFabulous
Loser: Team May—the week started off rough for embattled British Prime Minister Theresa May with Brexit Secretary David Davis and Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson resigning over her proposed “Soft Brexit” approach to EU negotiations. Things got slightly worse from there with a NATO summit that went off the rails, and then a lot worse when Donald Trump arrived to the UK for an official visit and said that May’s approach to Brexit was all wrong and that any US-UK trade deal was likely doomed. For good measure, Trump also said he thinks Boris Johnson would make a great Prime Minister. At this point, May probably thinks so, too. #YouBrexitYouBuyIt
The Week in Digging Up History
Winner: Spain—Spain’s new center-left government presented Congress with plans this week to exhume unidentified victims of Spain’s Civil War. They also have plans to exhume the remains of former dictator Francisco Franco and move them to more “modest” accommodations. Sounds about right. #DeadButNotForgotten
Loser: Egypt—a mysterious sarcophagus was found earlier this month in Egypt, and debate rages on whether it should be opened. Not sure why. #DONOTOPEN
The Week in Showing Up Against the Odds
Winner: Thai Soccer Team—all twelve members of the Thai soccer team and their coach were rescued this week as thousands of folks worked together to pull off this miracle. Best news story of 2018, and it’s not even close. #WeReallyNeededThis
Loser: US Delegation to North Korea—officials from the US Department of Defense were stood up by North Korean counterparts at a scheduled DMZ meeting this week. The North Koreans say they will reschedule the meeting for Sunday; let’s see. Maybe if Secretary of State Mike Pompeo had gotten a chance to deliver that Elton John “Rocket Man” CD Trump had signed for Kim Jong-un… #DontGoBreakingMyHeart
The Week in Grand Proclamations
Winner: Philippine president Rodrigo Duterte—Duterte promised late last week to resign if someone can prove God exists. Not sure that’s how faith works. Still, I like his chances of staying on. #IFightThereforeIAm
Loser: Recep Tayyip Erdogan—after being sworn in as President this week, Erdogan predicted to reporters that the country’s interest rates would fall; the rates of Turkish equities, bonds, and the lira all fell instead. Maybe appointing his son-in-law to head the finance ministry wasn’t the best way to shore up investor confidence in a faltering economy. #ClosingRanksAndEconomies
