#Winners and #Losers: The Greatest Generation

The Week in Impressive Comebacks

Winner: D-Day veterans—Tom Rice, Harry Read, and John Hutton (97, 95, and 94, respectively) made their return to Normandy this week for the D-Day anniversary celebrations by parachuting in, just like they did 75 years ago. Awesome. #GreatestGeneration

Loser: North Korea nuclear negotiators—last week, reports emerged that Kim Jong-un had ordered the execution of his nuclear negotiators after the Hanoi summit with US President Donald Trump went sideways. This week, one of those negotiators was seen at an art performance. But he’s the only one who’s resurfaced… A reminder there’s no more dangerous job in North Korea today than being a nuclear negotiator with the US. #HighWireAct

The Week in State Visits

Winner: Russia & China—Chinese President Xi Jinping made a three-day trip to Russia this week, in which he called his Russian counterpart his “best friend.” The two then agreed to allow the embattled Huawei to build up Russia’s 5G infrastructure. #TwoFriendsInNeed

Loser: US & UK—Donald Trump’s state visit this week was… fine. Yes, there were some gaffes along the way, but nothing of historically epic proportions. Theresa May gifted him a copy of the Atlantic Charter, and the Queen gifted him a copy of Winston Churchill’s history of World War II (in which he details how difficult it was to get the US to join the war effort). That’s about as passive-aggressive as diplomatic gifts get. #ThanksForAllTheFish

The Week in Swiping Safely

Winner: World Health Organization—the group released a sobering new report this week it says is a “wake-up call” on sexually transmitted infections, explaining that more than 1 million people contract an STI every day around the globe. Part of the problem is general complacency… another part of the problem is the rise of dating apps. #BumbleTrouble

Loser: Tinder users in Russia—Russia continues to be a world leader in cracking down on internet freedom. This week, it ordered Tinder to turn over messages and photos of users who are using the app within the country. #InRussiaAppsFindYou

The Week in Arms Sales

Winner: Taiwan—the US is currently preparing a package of Abrams tanks and various types of missiles worth upwards of $2 billion to sell to Taiwan, to which China strenuously objects. That’s kind of the point. #InsultANDInjury

Loser: Saudi Arabia—a bipartisan group of senators (including Lindsey Graham, who is usually a loyal Trump supporter) is preparing to block billions worth of arms sales to Saudi Arabia. Let’s just say the Saudis are going to have big problems on their hands when Donald Trump leaves the White House. #DontLeaveMeThisWay
