Winner, Living the Values Award
Professor Grace Lees-Maffei
Professor of Design History, University of Hertfordshire
Yesterday I was honoured to have been awarded the University of Hertfordshire’s Living the Values Award, one of the Vice-Chancellor’s Awards to celebrate the work of staff and students. Following an online ceremony at which the winners for each of the fourteen awards were announced, the results have been published here. I’ve blogged already about the awards, so here I just wanted to say thank you for the award, and to share my acceptance speech:
It is important to recognise that rather than belonging to one person, the FACES values are relational:
- We are friendly to one another
- Ambitious colleagues requires opportunities to grow, within the organisation
- Collegiality is about respectfully sharing responsibilities
- Enterprising colleagues are resourceful and show initiative to realise plans together
- And to be student-focussed is to think about how the work we do best develops others.
FACES values are qualities that we practice in interactions with one another so an award for Living the Values rewards us all.
I also want to express appreciation for the beautiful bouquet that the University sent to me, with a delivery perfectly timed for the ceremony, and to congratulate all of the nominees (see top), finalists and winners (below) across all 14 awards in the 2020 VCAs.

Well done Grace - and the flowers are lovely!
