Stoic Quote of the Week

We should enjoy good fortune while we have it, like the fruits of autumn.

-Epictetus

What I learned this week:

I adopted a process several years ago to help me realize the success that I have every day. At the end of the day, I spend a few minutes thinking about the day, and I identify three things that I consider to be successes or wins. This keeps me from having the feeling of today really sucked. Since I adopted this practice, I've had no bad days. Bad things happen during the day, but my measure of the day is always positive. Around the same time I started this personal process, I began having my clients and my mastermind members do the same thing. It is an amazing thing that our mind does when we purposefully look for the positives of the day. First off, the number three is a magic number in the human mind. If things go wrong, Navy pilots train for three options when landing on a carrier. That's because that is all our mind can remember in a crisis and have the functionality to choose. When I ask myself for three wins from today, it does a strange thing. I pop out the first, bam, bam. Then, the third requires a bit of thought and maybe even a glance at my schedule for the day. And there it is number three. My clients do the same thing: one, two, pause, oh yeah, here's three, and then a funny thing happens. They remember more. I started to ask my clients this wonderful phrase, "And what else can we celebrate?" After our minds shift to positive memories, more come to the front—the simple task of thinking about something positive shifts our perspective into finding more positive. A simple question and a less than five-minute task can change your whole perspective on the day. Here's a caveat I want you to think about when you do this exercise: You are the only one who can judge whether or not that thing is a win, and no one else can. If you can't think of something, think about what you had for lunch, that was a damn good peanut butter and jelly sandwich—WIN! Shift your mind to your wins and you find more and be able to build on the wins for the next day. Don't let a few bad encounters make your day 'bad.' Find the wins, change your state of mind, and create more wins.

Planning thought of the week:

When things go wrong, and you feel defeated or beat up, that is not the time to build your plan because you will miss out on possible solutions. Take a moment to assess the situation, calm down, and find the positive. Our minds do a crappy job of finding the best solution when it is focused on defeat and anger. Shift your mind to a positive outlook before you decide what to do next. A mind in a negative state only sees flight, flight, and freeze. There is no positive outcome in a negative state of mind.

Business idea or thought for the week:

Do you have the right people in the right seats on the bus? I love that quote from Jim Collins's book, Good to Great. It is so simple, but I often see businesses mess it up. Some don't even know if they have a bus, and others are on the bus to Abilene. When I see a business that is shooting from the hip and operating in reaction mode, I always feel for the team. The team is the one that suffers in this environment. They never know what they are going to do or if they will even have a job come Monday. That is a tough way to live your life, and too many people live that way. This is a twofold problem. First, the people that are OK living their lives that way, it is up to you to change. If you don't like living that way, change and do something about it. The second problem is the people that create that culture and environment. I know that many of us are workaholics and present hours worked a week as a badge of honor in many cultures around the USA. I, for one, am not in favor of it. I look at it like laying the mud on security in the raining cold of the mountains. I don't have to train for that, and I don't have to do that every day to prove I can. Yes, there are times that (not anymore) that I have had to lay there in the mud and cold rain. But I don't have to do it all the time to prove that I can. There are times in business that you are going to have to pull some 7/12s or more. But that is no way to live. It isn't healthy for you, nor is it healthy for your organization. If your business runs that way, I challenge you to change it. Start today. Mission First, People Always.

Veteran opportunity of the week:

Team Red, White, and Blue is doing their 10th annual Old Glory Relay to carry the flag across America. On 19 April, they will carry the flag from Pennsylvania to Illinois. They are always open for flag carriers and supporters. You can learn more here.

Someone I met this week:

I have stepped out of the box. I've been doing my workouts basically the same way for 40 years. Now, I've decided to explore a different route because I thought to myself, things haven't gotten better, so I'm continuing on the same path. It is time for a change. At the recommendation of several brothers of the regiment, I decided to begin exploring yoga. Yep, the rusty iron plates, push-ups, sit-ups, and pull-ups guy is moving into yoga. I had my first one-on-one session with a yoga therapist, Kristina Knight, this week, and it's been so good so far. I love Kristina's passion for what she does and how she wants to use her passion (Varna) to fulfill her purpose (Dharma). There is no doubt Kristina loves what she does and wants to help. I'll be sure to provide updates. Thanks for the connection, Yvette.
