Ground transportation is the most common option for African safaris. However, there are numerous challenges. Apart from the long distance from one destination to another, over 98% of the roads in the parks, particularly in Tanzania, are unpaved, making travel even more difficult during the rainy season. You will spend so many hours driving from one park to another.

  1. Benefits of flying in and out: Convenience and comfort: for seniors who may prefer to minimize long drives, it is the best option to use the sky and skip the ground. You will arrive in the park and begin your game drive directly from the airstrip; however, you may have to wait for the rangers to chase animals away from the runway before landing. Time-saving and enjoying the safari experience: driving from one park to another usually takes from 2:30 minutes to 4 hours; it all depends on the road condition. It may take longer! Flying in will save time and maximize time for enjoying the safari experience.

2. Accessibility:

Airstrips are available and operational in and near all of Tanzania's national parks, allowing for easy entry and exit. This makes it easier for seniors to access safari lodges and camps without having to travel long distances.

Serengeti National Park , for example, has seven airstrips, three of which are in the north (Kogatende, Lamai, and Lobo). There is one in the center (Seronera airstrip), one in the west (Grumeti airstrip), and two in the south.

Tarangire National Park has two airstrips, one in the north (Tarangire airstrip) and one in the south, which is well maintained (Kuro airstrip).

Nyerere National Park has several airstrips, including Mtemere, Matambwe, Sumbazi, Kibwa, Behobeho, Siwandu, and Stigler's George. These airstrips also serve the Selous Game Reserve.

3. Customized Safari Packages:

The packages are tailored specifically for seniors, with options for shorter game drives, more comfortable accommodations, and leisurely-paced activities. It depends on your interests and the time of year you want to be on safari. We will advise you on where to visit, which accommodation you should stay in, and the activities based on your physical abilities.

Most accommodations offer different activities for the body and mind to exercise and keep active, especially after the evening game drives or any time you feel like it. It could be a short walk, a massage, a spa treatment, yoga, or something else. For instance, consider Nanyukie Lodge, Serengeti .

5. Wildlife Viewing Opportunities:

Flying in and out, maximizing time spent in prime wildlife viewing areas, reducing travel fatigue, and optimizing photo opportunities for wildlife photography enthusiasts.

For example, you do not need to travel for 5 hours from Arusha to Serengeti and enjoy your game drives. You only need 2 hours to get to Serengeti, enjoy a game drive before lunch, and proceed with an evening game drive after lunch the same day.

7. Tips and Advice:

  • Packing Essentials: Pack light, focusing on essential items such as comfortable clothing, sturdy walking shoes, sunscreen, insect repellent, and a wide-brimmed hat for sun protection. In addition, bring any necessary medications and medical supplies, as well as a small first-aid kit for minor injuries or illnesses.
  • Staying Hydrated: You will have access to unlimited drinking water in the car, which will keep you hydrated. Most of the time, you will be in a hot and dry environment on safari.
  • Managing Medications: Pack an ample supply of your prescription medications, along with a copy of your prescriptions and any relevant medical documents. Keep medications in their original packaging to avoid confusion.
  • Selecting Reputable Safari Operators: Do your research online (TripAdvisor or Safaribookings reviews) and seek recommendations from friends or family members for a reputable safari operator. They must have qualified guides, reliable and well-maintained safari vehicles, and a dedication to responsible tourism practices.
  • Preparing for Unique Challenges: Safari presents unique challenges such as bumpy roads, early morning game drives, and fluctuating temperatures. Bring motion sickness medication, dress in layers to accommodate temperature changes, and carry a flashlight, particularly at night, when walking from your room to the common areas.
  • Embracing the Adventure: Embrace the spirit of adventure and approach your safari experience with an open mind and a sense of curiosity. Take plenty of photos, savor each moment, and immerse yourself in the sights, sounds, and smells of the African wilderness.
