Introduce yourself! What is your role at WFP? Where do you work and where are you from?
My name is Lemlem Getachew, CATO with WFP Mozambique. I am originally from Ethiopia and kickstarted my career in aviation with Ethiopian Airlines while pursuing my studies in Business Administration.
As an Aviation Officer with UNHAS, my day typically begins early, aligning with the demands of operational readiness and mission planning. A typical day involves overseeing flight preparations, coordinating with relevant parties, and ensuring compliance with aviation regulations and safety standards. Additionally, liaising with relevant authorities, and addressing any operational challenges that may arise.
Tell us about your professional journey: how did you start your career? What is your academic and previous professional background.
My professional journey began while I was still a student, balancing my academic pursuits with part-time work at Ethiopian Airlines. I started as a baggage service agent and gained valuable insights into the aviation industry and developed a passion for the field. I finished my degree in Business Administration at Curtin University and then completed a Ground Operations programme at the Ethiopian Aviation Academy. This training equipped me with the necessary skills to excel in operational roles within the aviation sector. I gained diverse experience in different ground staff departments throughout my time at Ethiopian Airlines.
My transition to the World Food Programme (WFP) marked a pivotal moment in my career. Initially joining as an Air Movement Assistant in Assosa, Ethiopia, I embraced the opportunity to use my expertise in the aviation sector to contribute to humanitarian efforts. Over the years, I have taken on increasingly challenging roles within WFP Aviation, eventually assuming the position of Aviation Officer in Mozambique. I am currently pursuing a Master’s degree at RKC and Salford University.
What brought you to WFP? Feel free to expand on how you joined the organization, and how your experience has been so far.
My introduction to the World Food Programme (WFP) was serendipitous yet fueled by a strong desire to merge my passion for aviation with humanitarian work. During my tenure at Ethiopian Airlines, I frequently interacted with WFP's aviation personnel at the airport, particularly when assisting with UNHAS operations. This exposure illuminated the vital role that WFP plays in delivering aid through aviation, resonating deeply with my aspirations.
Motivated by this realization, I proactively sought out opportunities to transition to WFP by leveraging the website link provided by the UNHAS team. After persistent efforts, I was fortunate to secure an interview for the role of an Air Movement Assistant, marking the beginning of my rewarding journey with WFP. Over the years, I have grown within the organization, transitioning to roles of increasing responsibility, including my current position as an Aviation Officer based in Mozambique.
My experience at WFP has been immensely fulfilling and enriching. From my initial role as a National Officer to my recent promotion as an International Officer, each step has presented unique challenges and opportunities for growth.
The dynamic environment, coupled with the impactful nature of WFP's humanitarian missions, has provided me with a sense of purpose and satisfaction in my work.
Can you tell us about UNHAS? What does an Aviation officer day look like?
UNHAS, plays a crucial role in facilitating the transport of humanitarian personnel, essential supplies, and equipment to regions that are often hard to reach due to conflict, natural disasters, or other challenging circumstances. As an integral part of the wider humanitarian response system, UNHAS ensures timely and efficient air transportation, enabling humanitarian organizations to deliver assistance to those in need swiftly and safely.
My role involves strategic decision-making, risk assessment, and crisis management to ensure the smooth execution of air operations. I work closely with diverse stakeholders, including humanitarian agencies, and local partners to optimize flight efficiency and effectiveness. Furthermore, my responsibilities extend to monitoring weather conditions, assessing security threats, and implementing contingency plans to safeguard the well-being of passengers and crew.
In essence, the role of an Aviation Officer with UNHAS is dynamic, challenging, and deeply rewarding.
Each day presents new opportunities to contribute to lifesaving missions, support humanitarian efforts, and make a positive impact in crisis-affected communities.

What is the most rewarding part of working at WFP?
At WFP the most fulfilling aspect of my role is the direct impact on vulnerable communities. Contributing to the organization's global efforts to tackle hunger and food insecurity brings immeasurable satisfaction. Each day presents the privilege of playing a part in essential humanitarian initiatives that truly transform the lives of those in crisis.
Furthermore, the collaborative and supportive atmosphere at WFP fosters a shared sense of purpose and unity among colleagues. Working alongside dedicated professionals who are equally committed to serving others creates an uplifting and motivating environment. What are some of the challenges you’ve faced in your job and how did you overcome them?
Throughout my career, I have encountered various challenges in my role as an Aviation Officer, ranging from operational complexities to being a woman. One significant challenge I faced was navigating the high-pressure and fast-paced nature of emergency response operations within WFP. Balancing the need for timely air transport with stringent safety protocols and logistical constraints posed a constant challenge that required meticulous planning and decision-making.
To overcome these challenges, I adopted a proactive approach focused on effective communication, collaboration, and strategic problem-solving.
By fostering strong relationships with team members, flight crews, and external partners, I was able to streamline coordination efforts, enhance operational efficiency, and mitigate potential risks.
Additionally, investing in ongoing training and professional development played a crucial role in overcoming technical challenges and enhancing my skill set. By staying abreast of industry best practices, regulatory updates, and emerging technologies, I was better equipped to address complex operational scenarios and optimize flight operations.
On a personal level, maintaining resilience, adaptability, and a positive mindset proved instrumental in overcoming challenges and navigating demanding work environments. ?Embracing lessons learned from setbacks, seeking mentorship from experienced colleagues, and maintaining a solution-oriented mindset were key strategies that empowered me to tackle obstacles head-on and grow from challenging experiences.
Overall, every challenge I encountered served as a valuable opportunity for learning, self improvement, and professional growth.
