"Wing It"! Students Take Flight in Juilliard-Inspired Music and Performance

The Performing Arts department at NAISAK had an exciting and productive term, with students achieving remarkable successes across music, movement, and drama. In music, 80% of lessons are now based on the Juilliard Certified Curriculum (JCC), providing students with a solid foundation in theory and performance.

What is "Wing It"?

One of the highlights of the term has been the Juilliard project, “Wing It!”, where students have been composing original soundtracks for film scenes. Year 9 students have already showcased their talent by composing complete soundtracks, which has been an inspiring moment for both peers and teachers alike. Ms. Angela Leake, one of the music teachers, noted, “I received an email from a Year 9 student who had composed the entire soundtrack for their scene. It’s inspiring to see how quickly they’re picking up the skills and creating something unique.”

Introducing the "NoteZarts!"

Beyond the classroom, students have excelled in extra-curricular activities such as the Choir and Music Ensemble (NoteZarts), with three successful performances held in the NAISAK school courtyard. These performances provided students with a platform to express their musical talents, connect with the wider school community, and develop their confidence by playing in front of large crowds.

Ms. Laura Opperman, Head of Performing Arts and Regional Lead for Juilliard, shared, “The students are always inspiring me to do better and bigger things for their music and their performances. They are incredible!

Looking Ahead to the KS3 "Celebration of Learning Show" in February 2025

Key Stage 3 students are gearing up for the KS3 Celebration of Learning Show in February, where Year 7 to Year 9 students will take the lead in planning, organizing, and performance. This event will be a fully student-led celebration of their achievements in performing arts, with students managing everything from backstage roles and props to program design and performing.

We’re giving the students the opportunity to lead the event themselves,” said Ms. Opperman. “It’s an empowering moment for them, as they take ownership of the learning they’ve done over the term.”

This celebration of student-led learning and creativity promises to be a fitting conclusion to what has already been a term of exceptional artistic growth.
