Wine Tasting with Bon Coeur - Week 1
I was recently invited to join the Bon Coeur 'Taste Wine Like a Pro' panel. Although severely underqualified on the 'pro' front I suspect, I endeavour to make up for it with some enthusiastic tasting.
This week I reviewed my first two wines (spoiler: they were both bloody tasty). The package arrived last week. I was impressed (and excited) to see what the team at Bon Coeur had selected for me. I was to be reunited with an old friend in the form of a bottle of Henry Fessy. Fond memories of our first encounter on the slopes in Les Arcs were flowing already...
Anyway. I digress. Back to the reviews...
Villa Wolf Riesling Dry 2018
The riesling’s appearance was light and fresh, and almost looks sparkling when first poured. The nose is fruity. It’s a distinctive aroma but I find it difficult to identify - possibly grapefruit?
The initial taste is very clean, with some light bubbles almost giving the impression of sweetness. But this gradually develops into slightly bolder fruity flavours leaving a citrus taste in mouth which lingers pleasantly.
Overall the wine gives lots of flavour whilst remaining light. Although a ‘dry’ reisling, it’s not sharp and makes for an easy drink on its own. I could also imagine it pairing well with fish or salads, especially with a citrus type dressing.
The bottle and labelling are typical of this type of wine: slim green bottle with white label and silver detailing. It wouldn’t stand out on a shelf, but the wine itself does talking enough.
Henry Fessy Saint Amour 2015
Ah Monsieur Fessy!
The Beaujolais pours with a deep, dark, impenetrable red colour. It has an aroma to match - a deep, earthy, plum smell with some ribena and a bit of spice thrown in.
However, it presents a surprisingly clean taste at first with hints of the aforementioned plum. This builds to a more robust flavour then tails off into a long, dry, quite acidic aftertaste. There are definitely flavours of spice in there, but I can’t quite pin them down.
The Saint Amour gives the impression of being a much heavier wine than it actually is. Perfectly drinkable on its own. But I think it would pair nicely with lighter meat dishes such as pork and chicken, or maybe even charcuterie.
Another very drinkable red from Henry Fessy. I’ll definitely be doing some experimenting with food pairings.
