Some Windows Server 2022 virtual machines are broken by February upgrades.

VMs running on vSphere ESXi 6.7 U2/U3 or vSphere ESXi 7.0.x are affected.

Please exercise caution if you receive any build or patch requests for the 2022 OS in VMware.

KB: KB5022842?

"Windows Server 2022 may not start up after installing KB5022842 on guest virtual machines (VMs) using that version of VMware ESXi, " Microsoft said.

Note: ?Other hypervisor platforms, including bare metal, may potentially be affected by this problem, according to some administrator reports.

Work Around Solutions:

  • Upgrade to vSphere ESXi 8.0 on the ESXi host that hosts the virtual machine in issue.
  • On the VMs, disable "Secure Boot."

It's better to avoid installing the KB until the issue is addressed.

To disable Secure Boot, follow these steps:

  1. Right-click the virtual machine and select?Edit Settings.
  2. Click the?VM Options?tab, and expand?Boot Options.
  3. Under?Boot Options, ensure that firmware is set to?EFI.
  4. Deselect the?Secure Boot?check box to disable secure boot.
  5. Click?OK.
