Windows 7 - What's Happening?
Windows 7 has long been around and has been a reliable operating system for many years. However, like all operating systems, they are not designed to last and have natural successors. Windows 8 and Windows 10 have come since the launch of Windows 7 and Windows 7 is soon to be going "End Of Life" Microsoft ended mainstream support for Windows 7 on January 13, 2015, but extended support won't end until January 14, 2020. This applies as long as you have Service Pack 1 installed.
What Does "End Of Life" Mean?
When it comes to Microsoft Operating Systems, "End Of Life" means that it will not be supported and that if anything does go wrong with it, Microsoft will not be developing patches or updates to fix it and you will need to upgrade to a newer OS - Windows 8 or Windows 10. Windows 10 would be the best solution as it is a newer OS and will be in use for a longer period of time than Windows 8.
What Should I Do Next?
There are two options that you can look at if you are running Windows 7:
1) Purchase a license for Windows 10 and install it on to your current machine (Laptop or Desktop)
2) Look at purchasing a new machine with Windows 10 Pre-installed.
Both options are suitable ways to stop running Windows 7 ahead of January 2020.
However, it may be more prudent to look at purchasing a new machine for a variety of reasons:
- Newer, more efficient and faster processors
- Solid State Drive storage as opposed to Hard Disk Drive leading to increased speed
- Newer operating system (Windows 10) with new and advanced features as well as eliminating issues of incompatibility with newer software
- A fresh start - a chance to reorganise your and declutter your current PC
- More often than not much smaller than older PC's/Laptops
