Windows 7, Out of Luck

Windows 7, Out of Luck

Windows 7 has run out of luck and hit the end of its 10 year support cycle. On 1-14-2020 all installations will no longer be eligible for any type of hotfixes, updates, or security patches from Microsoft. The publisher has introduced an Extended Support model for these devices still running 7 to give users more time to make the migration. This model requires the purchase of an additional SKU that is only available under and Enterprise Agreement vehicle and is licensed per device. Microsoft continues to show incentives for “cloud first” clients by offering a discounted SKU for M365 subscriptions. The SKU matches the Windows Server and SQL 08 model where it does not prorate and only covers twelve months from the end of support until another SKU is purchased. These offerings can be added at any time but it is recommended that clients do not use this as a last resort and expect a hasty turnaround time. Each installation will get a new MAK key so that traditional patching methods may continue to be used for those systems. For those who cannot move off Windows 7 and would like support, Microsoft is also offering their hosted Windows Virtual Desktop service with three years of Extended Support included in the fee.
