Windows 10 In-built Virtualization
Virtualization technology refers to creating a virtual version of anything including Operating System, Network System, Computer hardware or Storage System.
Among these the OS virtualization is widely famous technology to create multiple virtual operating systems on the same bare metal hardware.
Some of the popular virtualization products are ESX, ESXi, Hyper-V etc and these are hardware boxes with minimal operating system installed to interact with storage and memory.
There are some software virtualization applications are also available. Ex. VM-ware, Oracle Virtual Box etc.
But, now Microsoft has come up with in-built software virtualization in its Windows 10 Operating System.
Below are some details about it:
Enable Hyper-V to create virtual machines on Windows 10.
Hyper-V can be enabled in many ways including using the Windows 10 control panel, PowerShell or using the Deployment Imaging Servicing and Management tool (DISM).
System Requirements:
- Windows 10 Enterprise, Pro, or Education
- 64-bit Processor with Second Level Address Translation (SLAT).
- CPU support for VM Monitor Mode Extension (VT-c on Intel CPUs).
- Minimum of 4 GB memory.
The Hyper-V role cannot be installed on Windows 10 Home.
Upgrade from Windows 10 Home edition to Windows 10 Pro by opening up Settings > Update and Security > Activation.
Create a Virtual Machine with Hyper-V
Below are the steps to create VM with in-built hyper-v
- Open Hyper-V Quick Create from the start menu.
- OR Open Hyper-V Manager and in the upper right corner you can see "Quick Create..." option.
- Select an operating system or choose your own by using a local installation source.
a. If you want to use your own image to create the virtual machine, select Local Installation Source.
b. Select Change Installation Source.
c. Pick the .iso or .vhdx that you want to turn into a new virtual machine.
d. If the image is a Linux image, deselect the Secure Boot option.
3. Select "Create Virtual Machine"
That's it! Quick Create will take care of the rest.

5 年Nice regurgitation of the windows description. The key question is "Where the heck does one get a ' .iso or .vhdx ' ?? Does Microsoft expect you to buy a version of Windows 10 for every virtual machine? I understand the need for a different OS and would expect to have to come up with an .iso...but there is only one seat infron of this computer, no matter how many virtual machines are on it.
