There were once two men, both seriously ill, sharing a small room in a great hospital. It had one window looking out on the world. One of the men, as part of his treatment, was allowed to sit up in bed for an hour in the afternoon ..His bed was next to the window. But the other man had to spend all his time flat on his back.
Every afternoon, when the man next to the window was propped up for his hour, he would pass the time by describing to his neighbour, what he could see outside. The window apparently overlooked a park where there was a lake. There were ducks and swans in the lake, and children came to throw them bread and sail model boats. Young lovers walked hand in hand beneath the trees, and there were flowers and stretches of grass and games of softball. And at the back, behind the fringe of trees, was a fine view of the city skyline.
The man sitting behind ,would listen to the other man describe all of this, enjoying every minute. He heard how a child nearly fell into the lake, and how beautiful the girls were in their summer dresses. His friend’s descriptions eventually made him feel he could almost see what was happening outside.
It brought so much brightness and hope in his own existence inspite of his illness..
Then one fine afternoon, the thought struck him: Why should the man next to the window have all the pleasure of seeing what was going on? Why shouldn’t he get the chance? He felt ashamed, but the more he tried not to think like that, the worse he wanted a change. He’d do anything! One night as he stared at the ceiling, the other man suddenly woke up, coughing and choking, his hands groping for the button that would bring the nurse running.
But his neighbour watched without moving—and this he did right uptil when the sound of any more breathing stopped.....
In the morning, the nurse found the other man dead, and quietly took his body away.
As soon as it seemed decent, waiting for his moment, the man asked if he could be switched to the bed next to the window. So they moved him, tucked him in, and made him quite comfortable. The minute they left, he propped himself up on one elbow, painfully and laboriously, and looked out the window..., and what did he see...
It faced a blank wall...

5 年Let's move the story a bit. #.....there was a blank wall. Astonished.. "how it could be possible; there were so many beautiful things outside this window"; he became restless and immediately asked the nurse about those beautiful sceneries the other man used to describe him. The nurse could not understand at once but then all of sudden laughed out loud and replied, "I think you are joking to me now; how could the other man tell you all these, he himself was a blind man." Now the story ends.

5 年There is tremendous happiness in making others happy, despite our own situations. Shared grief is half the sorrow, but happiness when shared, is doubled. If you want to feel rich, just count all the things you have that money can’t buy. “Today is a gift, that is why it is called The Present .”

6 年Envy sucks the happiness which we otherwise Enjoy from what we have in our hand. It not only takes the pleasure of what we have in our hand by Gods grace but also at the same time increase the quotient of despair and worries. Aiming high is not at all bad. What is bad is desiring just because my neighbour/friend/colleague/relative ....... had. At the same time the person who enjoys abundance should not give complex by his/her attitude/behavior. However, even if you want to have it than work for it not envy. God bestows his blessings in any form on each one of us. We need eye to see it. If God gives wealth, health plays hide and seek game. If health is given than wealth eludes and likewise. We should be thankful to God for his blessings.
