Wind turbines getting bigger
Today there are more than 57,000 wind turbines operating in the United States. Over the past two decades, the average capacity of installed wind turbines has increased dramatically.
According to data compiled by the U.S. DOE’s Office of Energy Efficiency & Renewable Energy’s (EERE) 2018 Wind Technologies Market Report, during the late 1990s, virtually all turbines constructed were under 1.0-MW in size. By the mid-2000s most turbines deployed were between 1.0-MW and 2.0-MW, and by 2018 most turbines were between 2.0-GW and >3.0-GW, Today the average size of turbines deployed is nearly 2.5-GW.
