Wind Power Project by Green Infra Renewable Energy Limited

Last year, our GoNetZero? team members Camila Rossini Pantera and Le Van Viet ventured to Tamil Nadu to witness firsthand the transformative power of one of India's most efficient wind energy plants - the Wind Power Project by Green Infra Renewable Energy Limited (GIWEL).?

Nestled in Chandragiri, Thoothukudi district, this 250 MW wind power project stands as a beacon of efficiency and sustainability, contributing significantly to India's renewable energy share.?Their visit underscored Sembcorp Industries' commitment, through its wholly-owned renewables subsidiary (GIWEL), to spearhead the transition towards a greener future.??

Powered by 119 Suzlon S111 turbines (each of 2.1 MW), the Wind Power Project by GIWEL not only amplifies the renewable energy share of the Indian grid, but also marks its efficiency as one of the country's top wind power plants since its commissioning by the Indian government in June 2020.?? ?

This Verra-registered and certified wind power project (ID 1904) replaces approximately 707,799 tCO2e per year over its first 10 years. By offsetting 755,550 MWh/year of electricity that would otherwise be generated by fossil fuel-based power plants, this significantly reduces the environmental footprint, thereby playing a pivotal role in the global energy transformation.?

?? Technological Excellence in Monitoring and Operation?

The Wind Power Project by GIWEL hinges on its dedication to technological excellence, epitomised by the deployment of NetZeroOS, GoNetZero?’s proprietary smart energy asset management platform. The integration of NetZeroOS for real-time data analysis and operational oversight exemplifies Sembcorp’s commitment to maintaining high standards of efficiency and reliability. This technological backbone is crucial in optimising performance and ensuing the seamless integration of wind energy into the Indian grid, maximising the output and lifespan of energy assets.??

?? CSR Initiatives and Sustainable Development Goals??

Sembcorp Energy India Limited's (SEIL) engagement extends beyond energy – their CSR initiatives at the wind power site focus on various efforts aimed at supporting local communities and environmental sustainability. These initiatives, in alignment with the broader Sustainable Development Goals, include:?

  • Distributing dry rations to 150 families within the project vicinity??
  • Installing an indoor LED smart display video walls at the Thoothkudi site for effective Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) to the public. This initiative forms part of the district administration's efforts to drive behavioural changes and enhance public order through IEC campaigns. Covering crucial topics such as social interest messages, awareness on health and hygiene, digital literacy programs, and government schemes, the IEC campaigns through these smart boards aim to engage and educate the public for widespread impact communication.?
  • With an anticipated influence on around 1,112,000 locals from 24 villages in the surrounding areas of the SECI 1 project site, SEIL’s CSR endeavours reflect a profound commitment to advancing sustainable energy solutions alongside fostering community well-being and environmental stewardship.?
