Wind Energy Simplified: From Basics to Advanced Power Calculation with Complete Python Code

Welcome to the 26th edition of my Engineering Exploration series! In this article, we’ll explore how wind turbines generate power from the wind. While this is a broad topic, we’ll concentrate on the basics of wind energy and focus specifically on Horizontal Axis Wind Turbines (HAWTs), the most commonly used turbines for both onshore (land-based) and offshore (sea-based) applications.

Since early history, people have been harnessing wind energy for tasks like propelling boats, pumping water, and grinding grain. The first windmill used for electricity production was built in Scotland in 1887 by Professor James Blyth of Anderson's College, Glasgow. Later that year, Charles Brush in the USA created another wind-powered machine to generate electricity, marking the beginning of modern wind power.
