To Win... You Need to Be Obsessed

Sailing yacht Mariska's victory at the 2023 Copa del Rey Classic for Big Boats in Mahon, Menorca, holds valuable lessons for success in both the world of sailing and the business arena. As a crew member on Mariska and an entrepreneur, I've discovered key takeaways that can drive triumph in any competitive endeavor: a clear vision and strategy, unwavering passion, and the power of teamwork. Big thanks to Dan and Manon to take Anja and me.

Sailing yacht Mariska's triumphant win at the 2023 Copa del Ray Classic Boats in Mahon, Menorca, was more than just a sporting achievement; it was a testament to the power of leadership, strategy, passion, and teamwork. 18-20 people are needed to sail the boat. As a proud crew member aboard Mariska and an entrepreneur navigating the intricate waters of the business world, I've realized that these principles are universal and critical for success.

Vision and Strategy: Much like in sailing, where you must harness the wind and outmaneuver competing boats, business demands a clear vision and strategy. To win, you need to know your strengths, read wind or trends, understand your competition's tactics, and devise a superior strategy. It's about having a grand vision, the ability to adapt to changing conditions without losing sight of your ultimate goal. In sailing, as in business, tactical acumen is crucial, allowing you to change course when necessary while staying on course toward your objective.

Passion and Perseverance: Passion is the driving force behind both sailing and entrepreneurship. It's the energy that propels you forward, even in the face of setbacks. In the world of sailing, the boat that leads in the early stages of a race doesn't always emerge as the victor. The same holds true in business; it's not about starting strong but sustaining that passion and commitment throughout the journey. Passion is what differentiates those who succeed from those who merely participate.

The Power of Team: In both sailing and business, the adage holds true: the best team wins. A well-coordinated crew, each member with a distinct role, is indispensable. It takes exceptional leadership to assemble the right people and mold them into a cohesive unit. Respect for each team member is non-negotiable. Effective communication and motivation are essential to harness individual talents and navigate through challenges. In both domains, you often find yourself in uncharted waters, making decisions based on rapidly changing circumstances. Listening attentively to every team member's input and having the flexibility to alter your course when needed are keys to success.

Conclusion: Sailing on Mariska was an incredible experience that underscored the importance of these principles – vision and strategy, passion, and teamwork – in achieving victory. Whether you're steering a sailing yacht to a regatta win or charting a course for business success, remember: to win, you need to be obsessed. The obsession fuels your journey, making every setback an opportunity and every challenge a chance to thrive. So, set your sails high, never lose sight of your vision, sail toward your goals with unwavering passion and a dedicated team by your side.

Kearn to tack, gybe, and go round corners, racing becomes a lot easier.

Nicely put, Oliver Eckart few people realize that after several hours of efforts, the stakes hang on a few seconds, and the culmination of all the maneuvers well executed. The requirement to be alert for changing circumstances and adaptability to chaning flow is the one that resonates - for me - as the most a useful skill to master on the decks and in the boardroom! Reactivity and adaptability are second nature to the tacticians here and there! Well done MARISKA for their interim 1st 'Big-Boat' in the circuit.
