Finally, some movement in the right direction, Arizona!
This week by unanimous vote, AZ lawmakers voted to enact Senate Bill 1523, also known as Jake's Law.
Federal law has long required insurance coverage to be no more restrictive for depression, anxiety and addiction than for other illnesses. But insurers often make it impossible by adding pre-authorizations, medical necessity and in-network requirements... all of which can delay care or cut it off prematurely, leaving people in dire need without the support and care they need!
This bill was designed to create accountability so insurers aren't abandoning individuals in high risk mental health situations, like suicide attempts and ideation, too early or against clinical recommendations.
- It boosts state enforcement of federal law by forcing insurers to regularly report how they are complying and making it easier for patients to file complaints.
- It requires improved discharge protocols for patients who are admitted for a suicide attempt or ideation, to ensure they get the referrals and risk assessments they need.
- It creates a team that can study suicide deaths with more speed and depth, so more detailed strategies can be put in place to prevent them.
- It prohibits insurers from denying coverage solely because services were provided at a school.
- It establishes a fund, so students whose parents can’t afford their insurance deductibles or copays can more easily get services at school.
