Wimpy Leaders don't break bread. (3rd in series)

Wimpy Leaders don't break bread. They don't even come to the table. They don't eat with their people. If they ate with their people they'd have to get to know them.

  Wimpy Leaders don't get to know their people. They don't know about their kids or their hobbies. "Does Paula coach little league?” “What grade is Pete's daughter in?” “How bad is Sarah's mom's cancer?"

  Wimpy Leaders don't know because they don't ask. Wimpy Leaders don't ask because they don't want to know. Wimpy Leaders don't want to know because they don't care to know.  

Because caring requires personal investment, and investment requires energy, and energy requires strength. And Wimpy Leaders are, well, "wimpy".

  Do you know who was the first person to call me, after my wife died in 2012? It was my boss, Michael Cardone, Jr. It was just a few minutes after I watched Debbie breathe her last breaths in hospice. I cried, gathered my composure and prepared to call my kids and give them the news. My pastor and the nurse had just left the room. I stood there alone with Debbie's body. And my cell phone rang.   Servant Leaders break bread with you. They ask, they know about your family, and they care to know. They are personally invested in you. My Servant Leaders, Michael and his wife Jacquie regularly broke bread with us. Debbie, the kids and I often ate at their house. We swam in their pool and fished off their dock. We made lots of memories in their backyard. They flew in from Florida to attend Debbie’s funeral, because that’s what Servant Leaders do.

  Michael and Jacquie regularly ask about my mom, too. They know that she has stage IV cancer, also. They employed her and clearly loved her for decades. They did the same for thousands more. That’s what Servant Leaders do.  

  And I will NEVER forget, all that these Servant Leaders did for me.
