Willow News - February edition

Earlier this week was World Cancer Day. Below, we share the story of Lewis who was given a Special Break to watch the cricket, following treatment for a germ cell tumour.

We were delighted to be named as a charity beneficiary of the Scamp and Dude ‘Go Grab Life’ clothing collection. You can find out more about that in this month’s newsletter, as well as other opportunities to support Willow.

Lewis’ Special Break

Lewis (R) and his dad went to watch England v Australia at Lords

Twenty-two-year-old Lewis Ward from Durham has received treatment for a germ cell tumour. Willow organised a Special Break for Lewis and his dad to watch England v Australia at Lords, which helped give him much needed time out.

“It was great to have something to look forward to and to feel normal again once I was there.

“Cricket helped me get through my treatment. I remember the cold January mornings on the way to Freeman hospital watching England v India in the car and then on the ward. Waiting for the next test match made everything a little more bearable and helped me get through it. It took my mind off things, I think.

“When it came to my break, I really couldn't have asked for a better performance. It was a really special day."

Lewis’ dad, Andrew, added, “The whole experience is something we will never forget. It had a huge impact on Lewis from a mental health perspective.

“After a hard year receiving treatment, it is always special for a parent seeing their child more like the child they were before treatment, rather than worried and sad.”

We were lucky enough to be chosen as one of three charities to benefit from clothing company, SCAMP & DUDE ’s latest collection.

Launching on World Cancer Day, the ‘Go Grab Life’ collection honours Willow beneficiary and breast cancer campaigner, Nicky Newman, who sadly died from secondary breast cancer in 2023, aged 35.

Designed with Nicky’s husband Alex and Scamp & Dude founder and CEO Jo Tutchener Sharp, Scamp & Dude x Nicky Newman ‘Go Grab Life’ includes sweatshirts, t-shirts and tote bags.
