Wildfires in Texas and Oklahoma; International Women’s Day; provision in Africa and more
Welcome back to Hope Makes It Happen! Thank you so much for joining us. This week, we’re focusing on the highly destructive wildfires in Texas and Oklahoma, a historic celebration, and how empowerment programs are changing the landscape of Africa.
Stay tuned till the end for some upcoming events you might want to know about.
Historic Texas fires
What started as a normal day in Texas turned into one of the largest and most destructive wildfires in the state’s history.
With the Smokehouse Creek Fire crossing over into Oklahoma, at least 1.1 million acres of land — including residential homes and grazing land for cattle — were completely decimated. It forced many families to evacuate in order to escape the fires. The Convoy of Hope team is on the ground working with local pastors and community leaders in the Texas Panhandle to assess the damage and community needs.?

Stories from Sudan
Ten months have passed since the start of the conflict in Sudan. Over 10.7 million people are displaced, leaving women, children, and families vulnerable to violence and dangerous conditions. Convoy of Hope has distributed more than 1.5 million meals — along with tents and mosquito nets — to help provide a sense of hope amid the extreme challenges.
Fatma, 73, expresses her immense gratitude for the supplies, such as hot meals and mosquito nets. On top of the displacement, Fatma battles immobility and painful swelling in her joints. For Fatma, a meal and shelter help her to keep fighting for another day.?
Sara, 10, now lives with her mother in one of the refugee camps where Convoy provides food and relief. She breathes a sigh of relief every time she receives a hot, nutritious meal from Convoy. Enjoying a warm meal may seem small, but for a kid like Sara, it makes all the difference.?

Women mean business
“It’s amazing how one opportunity can change everything,” said Gebeyanesh, a woman in Convoy’s Women’s Empowerment program in Ethiopia.
This week marks an annual celebration for Convoy of Hope — International Women’s Day! Take a moment to think of a strong woman in your life that has invested in you and continues to influence the way you live. Gebeyanesh is one of those incredible women who is passionate about providing for her family and running a business.
About a year ago, she joined Convoy of Hope’s Women’s Empowerment program. Since then, she has completed her financial education, vocational training, and was able to start her business selling goods and groceries with the start-up capital provided by Convoy. A year later, her business is thriving.
“Thanks to my new job, I have a steady source of income that allows me to provide for my family. Not only that, but the job is also profitable, giving me the ability to purchase things for my children that I never thought possible,” she shared.?
Not only has the Women’s Empowerment program changed her life — it will continue to positively impact her children and the coming generations. That’s breaking the cycle of generational poverty. “The support I got from Convoy of Hope is more than money,” Gebeyanesh said. “It has transformed my whole life.”
