The wildest job in Silicon Valley

Hello from the FT newsroom. Linda Yaccarino became CEO of Twitter just over 100 days ago. A dizzying and unpredictable period has followed, during which the platform has morphed, somewhat messily, into newly branded X.

The FT’s tech correspondent Hannah Murphy met Yaccarino several times over the course of a month to find out how — and, more to the point, why — she took the wildest job in Silicon Valley. The pair discussed what it is like to report to Elon Musk in his “hardcore” working culture, Yaccarino’s vision for the platform and what freedom of expression means to her. The FT will be watching to see whether the top job makes her or breaks her.

My choices this week

  1. The mystery around China’s ousted foreign minister has deepened. Our reporters have learned that Qin Gang, a one-time Xi Jinping favourite who disappeared this summer, was allegedly in a relationship with television presenter Fu Xiaotian — who had a child in the US last year via a surrogate, according to those close to her.
  2. Amazon uses its monopoly to exploit sellers and overcharge consumers, the US Federal Trade Commission argued in a lawsuit this week. It was only a matter of time before chair Lina Khan — who previously argued for Amazon’s break-up — launched this attack. What will it mean for the ecommerce giant?
  3. Hedge funds are amassing big, risky bets in the US Treasury markets, and regulators are worried. This fascinating story explores the world of the basis trade and how quickly things could unravel in the world’s most important asset market. (Free to read)
  4. Some German states risk becoming ungovernable after elections next year, as the far-right party Alternative for Germany surges in polls. The FT’s Berlin bureau chief Guy Chazan dives into the key issue uniting the party’s supporters.
  5. What will a long war mean for Ukrainian democracy? Presidential elections are due next March, and Kyiv’s allies are divided on whether they would be a destabilising disaster or a symbol of all that they are fighting to protect. Europe editor Ben Hall weighs Zelenskyy’s options. (Free to read)
  6. Iran’s holy city of Qom is not commonly known as a hub of cutting-edge technology, but religious leaders are hoping to harness artificial intelligence to strengthen the country’s Islamic character. Some even propose robots could help issue fatwas, reports Iran correspondent Najmeh Bozorgmehr.

I am glad to share green news to the world. WindSol, the first UNLIMITED RANGE system for EVs. WindSol is a system to gather wind and solar energy from the environment to generate electric power for EVs. -WS will help alleviate global warming; harmful emissions, etc.; -is convenient for users/drivers by not having to charge their cars ever, and is free; - is easy and economic to adopt by automakers; -requires significant less batteries ??, ~1-2kwh only, Acid/led or lithium; -doesn't violates the 2d law of thermodynamics, + little drag is added, as per AI findings; -Wind generators/turbines ("WT") can be mounted on different parts of cars to utilize the windflow. I would highly appreciate sharing this green news with the public in general, the media, scientific community, environmentalists, the government, and auto-makers. Linda Yaccarino's journey as Twitter CEO, especially in the midst of the platform's transformation into X, was most fascinating. It is always intriguing to gain insights into Silicon Valley leaders' minds and their experiences. Hannah Murphy's interviews and exploration of Yaccarino's vision and her interactions with Elon Musk provided valuable context. She raised intriguing questions about the platform's future. The mysterious circumstances surrounding China's former foreign minister, Qin Gang, and the implications of the US Federal Trade Commission's lawsuit against Amazon are stories of global significance that deserve our attention. The forthcoming elections in Germany and the rise of Alternative for Germany add a significant political dimension to the mix. Guy Chazan's dive into this issue was enlightening and thought-provoking. Ukraine's upcoming presidential elections and the role they might play in the ongoing conflict was a sobering reminder of the challenges facing nations striving for democracy in the face of adversity.
