Early life and education

Meiklejohn was born and raised in the rural town of Provost, Alberta, Canada. At the young age of 14 he started working at his father’s Chrysler Dealership in Provost, Alberta, Canada. At the age of 17 he moved to Red Deer, Alberta to attend High School.

Career

From the period of 1966 to 1972 he was involved in all type’s of construction, such as an apprentice carpenter, roofer, carpet layer and operator of heavy-duty equipment related to building roads.

In 1972 Meiklejohn developed a business plan and secured a 50% silent partner to open a retail furniture store in Edmonton, Alberta. Meiklejohn took charge of all product acquisitions and successfully managed the store until 1973 when he sold his 50% share in the business to his partner.

After selling the store in 1973, he took a short sabbatical, then he entered Edmonton’s fast-growing real estate industry.

In 1975 he became a licensed real estate agent. He saw success quickly and by 1977 Meiklejohn became a sales manager for a real estate company which specialized in listing and selling residential and commercial developments. His team comprised of 15 sales représentatives. In 1975 he also quickly acquired 7 residential properties, all of which he renovated, then rented for 5 years.

A year later in 1978 Meiklejohn would open up his own commercial and residential real estate company where he listed and sold numerous residential and commercial properties before closing the business in 1979 and selling his properties to move to Vancouver, British Columbia.

In 1982 he became an account executive for a Richmond, British Columbia, Canada based signage leasing company. He hit his stride by delivering the companies highest sales volume for sales across Canada and Washington State in his first 3 months.

In 1983, believing he could be more successful on his own he incorporated a new billboard company Westcoast Advertising Company Ltd. in the Province of British Columbia, Canada. To raise the capital required to fabricate and install the billboards, Meiklejohn sold 66.6% of the company's shares to two investors on the condition they provide security through the Bank of Montreal allowing the bank to provide Westcoast with the necessary capital.

This early initiative was successful, providing Westcoast with enough capital to allow Meiklejohn to lease a manufacturing plant where he would supervise construction and installation of all billboards.

He would sell outdoor advertising so successfully the company always had 100% occupancy. The advertising base was a mixture of national and local advertisers. He bought out the partners in 1985.

In 1986 Meiklejohn Westcoast sold of its ground leases and billboards to Jim Pattison of Jim Pattison Group, Canada's second largest privately-held company earning a substancial profit.

The billboards Pattison acquired in Vancouver are now part of Pattison Outdoor Advertising, the largest out-of-home advertising company in Canada

During this period, he also incorporated Trans-Canada Display Inc., another billboard company in the Province of British Columbia, Canada. Trans-Canada Display Inc. signed a long term contract with Rothmans International to install and manage a total of 350 single-sided billboards which were installed on grocery store exteriors across British Columbia and dozens of billboards in Chillawack, British Columbia.

Meiklejohn sold Trans-Canada Display to Mr. Paul Bergeron in 1985. He is still operating the company.

Even after the sale to Pattison Group Meiklejohn’s foray into outdoor advertising signage was far from over. Over the next decade Ken Meiklejohn would further cement this status as an authority in outdoor advertising industry.

In 1988 he and partners opened up a billboard company that serviced Saskatoon and Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada. Financing was arranged by taking out a $350,000 line of credit with CIBC in Regina, Saskatchewan. Jim Pattison also ended up acquiring these billboards, thereby giving his company its first presence in Saskatchewan. This allowed Jim to add these markets into national advertising campaigns that are usually booked by the large advertising agencies in Toronto, Ontario.

In 1996 he formed a new outdoor advertising company, Spectacular Outdoor Advertising Inc. that entered into a commission based agreement with a company based out of Toronto, Ontario, Mediacom Inc., which went on to become better known as CBS Outdoor until an eventual rebranding as OutFront Media.

In under two-years Spectacular Outdoor/Meiklejohn secured dozens of billboard locations throughout Greater Vancouver, earning approximately $550,000 in commissions, thereby allowing OutFront Media to gain its first presence in the Vancouver marketplace.

OutFront went on to be awarded the bus shelter contact in the City of Vancouver, thereby making it possible for them to sell national advertising campaigns on the bus shelters and billboards.

In 1986, he founded First Capital Sign Leasing Ltd. which specialized in leasing store front signage to hundreds of businesses in the Lower Mainland of British Columbia. The financing to pay for signage was arranged by a $3 million dollar face value revenue sharing agreement with a company owned by known Vancouver investor Mr. Peter Allard. Income from the leases was divided up between First Capital and Mr. Allard’s company until Meiklejohn’ bought out Mr. Allard’s share in 1987. He earned a profit.

A few years ago Peter donated $30 million to the Peter A. Allard School of Law at the University of British Columbia. His name is displayed on the building.

In 1988, Meiklejohn witnessed a changing of the tide in outdoor advertising with the proliferation of digital technology. In response, he founded Spectacular Electronic Advertising (Canada) Inc. and incorporated several new subsidiary companies in the process.

The subsidiaries signed 10-year ground leases to install dozens of large pylon signs on shopping malls in British Columbia and Alberta. The signs featured on the top programmable electronic message centers. The message centers were programmed from the Vancouver office.

Fixed advertising panels on the signs were pre-leased on long term rental contracts to mall tenants which included some of the largest banks and retailers in Canada, including TD Canada Trust, CIBC, London Drugs, Winners, Shoppers Drug Mart, and many more.

To raise the capital to fabricate and install the signage a high net worth partner that owned dozens of shopping malls in British Columbia and Meiklejohn entered a partnership with a sign-leasing company named Pacific Coast Leasing Inc., giving the investor a 51% stake in the company while Meiklejohn maintained a 49% share. The partnership arranged a $3 million dollar line of credit with Royal Bank in Canada. Meiklejohn eventually bought out the partner. They earned a significant profit.

Being a long-term strategic thinker and watching the success of Home Adviser, Angies List, Google, Facebook, Craigslist and other online platforms that sell digital advertising Mr. Meiklejohn decided to through his hat into the ring of internet-based digital marketing with a dedicated focus on residential products and services advertising.

He retained a programmer and between the two of them they have successfully launched www.amvideoclassifiedsglobal.com and brought online the world's first virtual home show platform. The company has 600 video classified advertising platforms (virtual home shows) online in 15 North American countries. To view display ads in Vancouver enter Vancouver in our search bar.

Each virtual home show platform features six main categories, including home improvement retail stores, home services, building products and services, wholesale home improvement products, residential real estate sales, and residential real estate rentals.

Advertisers can choose a host and subscribe to a display advertisement online. Like his billboard companies advertising revenues will be derived from selling display advertising to a mixture of local and national advertisers. As new markets are developed around the world the company plans on selling display advertising to global advertisers.

The virtual home show platforms are open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year for shoppers’ convenience.

Shoppers can browse the sites by entering a market area or product in the home page search bar. They can also browse each individual virtual home shows. The company also earns income from video production.
