June 1st is the formal start of The Atlantic Hurricane Season. According to the National Hurricane Center, 7 hurricanes have made a US landfall since 1900 (4 since 1950 - see below).
In June 1957, Hurricane Audrey slammed into the Louisiana-Texas border as a strong Category 3 storm with 125 mph winds. It caused unprecedented devastation, particularly due to a powerful storm surge amplified by Audrey's rapid intensification just before landfall. The storm caused widespread property damage, power outages, and tragically, over 500 deaths, ranking it as one of the deadliest hurricanes to ever hit the US.
