Why You're Getting Rejected Before a Phone Call

I screen specific tech resumes at Google. Incredible people with amazing stories get sent rejection emails. Below are my top reasons why:
- You aren't catering your resume to show me you have the minimum qualifications listed on the job description. If I don't see that you have the skills my team is looking for, I won't be able to move forward with your application for this role.
- You aren't sharing good examples of HOW you have the minimum qualifications on the job description. What's a project you worked on that demonstrated those specific tech skills I'm looking for?
Hiring teams put SO much effort into their job descriptions. Take time to see what skills they talk about often. They're trying to grab a very specific skillset. Do you have that skill set? If so, show me HOW you have it. Put a majority of your effort into catering your resume to the job description. Let your resume be the key to your success!

6 年I'm slightly on the fence here- There is definitely validity to these points and i certainly agree for the most part. A well crafted resume is essential in painting the picture/telling the story, but it is not the complete picture.? As a Recruiter I definitely take some responsibility in digging and identifying what may be there, but not listed. I think good recruiters are detectives in this regard- seeking out missing content and calling out exaggerated content. Again, a poorly crafted resume can be an obvious pass, but if employers, years of exp. and certification/license are matching, it's worth digging a little deeper to verify. Hiring teams put a lot of effort into a job description, but it's also a recruiters role to assess and provide feedback along with questions as to the "why" certain information my be listed. Are we being too particular/picky? Is it all "required"? are we listing too much info? will the description limit our candidate pool right out of the gate? I've often been in situations where as a recruiter I had to save us from ourselves. Everyone does have a story to tell and it's important to learn what that story is. The minute I begin making decisions based solely on surface level information, is the day I am no longer being a recruiter. the resume gets you the interview, but not the job #Recruiting?#ResumeTips?#HireBetter
